Freddie Mercury, universally known as one of the best rock performers of all time, lived until he became a legend. His exciting life has made him from an art student, to the frontman of one of the best bands ever and a successful solo artist and songwriter of the 80s of the last century.
"The Show Must Go On" is a song by Queen from their 1991 album "Innuendo".
While it is believed that it was written by Freddie Mercury and that it represents his farewell song, this is only partially true. In fact, the basis was written by guitarist Brian May, inspired by Mercury's struggle with illness, his courage and perseverance in the last days.
Freddie Mercury, was suffering from AIDS, although it was not officially known at the time. By mid-1991, he was already so ill that he could barely walk, so May was worried about whether he would be physically able to sing such a demanding song. That's why May sang the demo versions, even though he had to use falsetto on certain, too high, tones.
However, to the surprise of all the members of the group, when it came time to record, Freddie came to the studio, drank some vodka and then sang the whole song without error from the first attempt. After that, Freddie Mercury couldn't go on, he was too weak to record a video, so no new material was made for him, but a collage of videos of the group made between 1981 and 1991 was made.
He passed away on November 24, 1991, shortly after the album was released. He is still considered one of the best singers who ever lived.
Freddy, who was 45 when he died on November 24, 1991, always thought philosophically about the end of his life. “I don’t expect to live to old age and I’m not interested in that at all,” he said.
The song is about life on stage, about the fact that all personal problems must be left behind when performing, and the text is full of illusions and metaphors. Finally, the text speaks of determination and desire for life: "I have to find the will to carry on with the show"
In my opinion, the verse that is most autobiographical is,“ My make-up may be flaking but my smile still stays on ”It was just like that. No matter how bad Freddie was, he never grumbled or asked for any sympathy. That battle was only his and no one else's, and he always showed a brave face, despite the worsening situation. "
