Adele, real name Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, is an English pop singer and songwriter who was born on May 5, 1988, in Tottenham, London, England. Her soulful expressive voice and classically produced compositions make her one of the most widely popular performers of her time.
Adkins was reared in several working-class London neighborhoods by a young single mother. She learnt to play the guitar and the clarinet as a child and enjoyed singing contemporary pop music. She didn't explore a musical career until she was in her early teens, when she discovered rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-century singers. A buddy began putting songs Adkins had written and recorded onto the social networking Web site Myspace while she was honing her skills at a government-funded secondary school for the performing arts. Her songs ultimately drew the attention of record labels, and she got a contract with XL Recordings a few months after graduating.
