9 tips for people with orthostatic hypotension

Orthostatic hypotension is the type of sudden hypotension that occurs when a person stops suddenly or while standing for long periods without movement, and may sometimes be accompanied by dizziness or a loss of consciousness. This condition can occur with anyone of different ages, but it becomes more important in older adults.

There are several simple steps to deal with or prevent orthostatic hypotension, and your doctor may give you several suggestions, including the following:

1- Increasing the amount of salt in your diet .. It must be used with caution and after discussing the matter with the doctor, excessive use of salt can cause high blood pressure to the health level of it, which leads to new health risks.

2- Eat small meals .. If you suffer from low blood pressure after eating, the doctor may recommend eating small meals that contain a few carbohydrates.

3- Drink plenty of fluids. Regular water intake helps prevent symptoms of low blood pressure, but avoid drinking alcohol because it may exacerbate orthostatic hypotension.

4- Do exercise .. Do calf exercises before sitting, and when getting up from bed, sit on the side of the bed for one minute before standing up. Regular exercise may help reduce the symptoms of orthostatic hypotension.

5- Avoid bending at the waist .. If something falls from you on the floor, sit in a squatting position on your knees to get it back.

6- Wear compression stockings or belly belts ... it may help reduce symptoms of orthostatic hypotension.

7- Stand slowly .. You can relieve dizziness and lightheadedness associated with orthostatic hypotension by dealing with things calmly when changing position from lying down to standing. Instead of quickly jumping out of bed in the morning, breathe deeply for a few minutes and then sit slowly before standing.

8- Lift the headrest in your bed .. Sleeping with your headrest slightly raised in your bed may help resist the effects of gravity.

9- Move the legs while standing .. If you start to feel symptoms while standing, put the thighs in the position of scissors and press them, or place one of the feet on a shelf or a chair and lean on it to the front as much as possible. These maneuvers flow blood from the legs to the heart
