A short introduction to Tantra

Traditional religious beliefs, for those who are deeply involved segregate worldly pleasures seekers from serious practitioners. It is a choice between either of the two. But this choose one approach is difficult for most common men as they want to enjoy the natural urges of worldly desires and simultaneously are drawn towards spirituality. And when they don’t find a way to balance both then the most common option chosen is to repress the spiritual urges and follow the worldly desires. Or we try to do both and become some sort of hypocrite.

The tantric approach provides a solution to this dilemma as it takes the both these nature into consideration. It accepts the fact that a human is complete with both these two sides of him.

Tantra means ‘to weave, to expand and to spread'. It means that the followers can achieve true fulfillment when all the threads of the fabric of life are woven as per nature’s designated pattern. At birth we are pure as per nature’s design but as we grow up attachment fear desire ego etc tend to destroy that fabric. Tantra helps in repairing and reweaving the fabric of life and restores it to its original form. Tantra is also another form of yoga.

Everyone has a latent power inside them. To attain any meaningful accomplishment in the spiritual domain or in normal life we require great strength and stamina. Until that latent power is awakened we will not be able to accomplish anything meaningful in either of the domain.

That latent power is called ‘shakti’ – the power of the soul and the divine force within. It is largely dormant within all of us except a few and it stays that way the whole life. When not awakened we find it next to impossible to achieve anything worthwhile both in worldly pleasures and spiritual field. Tantra aims to awaken and use this shakti to achieve our objectives.

It is a commonly misunderstood pursuit as it is attached with sex, witchcraft, black magic, controlling others mind and seduction. But it is a scientific path as well as a spiritual path. Spiritually it aims at purifying the heart and mind and following a spiritually illuminating philosophy of life. At the scientific level it deals with techniques whose effectiveness depends on tantric mudras, mental exercises, use of specific materials in rituals and use of mantra and yantras. These can be taken as formulas, when applied correctly will yield the desired result. When these accomplishments fall in the hand of wrong people then it can be misused for wrongful gains thereby giving it a bad name.

But genuine masters of this field are difficult to find even in its land of origin that is India. But real seekers can surely find one such master as it is said in spiritual context in India that when the student is ready the master will automatically come to him. Thus it becomes possible for a true seeker to cultivate an understanding and knowledge of this complicated path in all its richness.
