Nowadays it is very important to have a good appearance. It is true that your passions, believes and behaviour play a determinant piece of your character. However, the first thing a person often notices is the other's appearance, their looks (at least for non-blind people). You can be the greatest person in the world, but if you can't get past of the "beauty barrier", you may not be noticed. It is a sad truth, but there are some things you can do about it.

While you can buy some cool clothes or even get a new haircut to quickly improve your appearance, I would like to address something a lot of men still overlook: your face. Not only a matter of style but also of health, your facial skin has a lot to say about yourself. It is one of the first things people notice on you, so you should aim to be at its best. If you neglected your facial skin for years and would like to start giving your skin the good treatment it deserves, I have a simple 3 steps system to get you started.

1. Wash your face

Sounds pretty basic stuff, but the true is simply washing your face in the shower may not be enough. If untreated, your face skin will be dirty and with excessive oil. Besides the unpleasant shiny aspect, you could also develop some skin diseases such as acne.

The best thing is to wash your face every morning and every evening with clean water. There are some products in the market that allow you to remove the extra oil from your face, often named facial cleansers. If you don't have access to such products, you can also use a bit of soap, however be warned that it may also dry your skin. Regardless the option you choosing, do not wash aggressively: be gentle to your skin and wash it slowly, making your face wet first and then applying the product of your choice.

2. Use a moisturiser

After getting your face clean, its time to hydrate it. Let me start to say that washing your face will actually dehydrate it and the reason is simple: the oil your skin produces is not only dirt, but also a form of protection so your skin does not dry out. When you wash your skin, you are also removing these oils.

A moisturiser can help you keeping your facial skin clean and hydrated. Make sure you choose one that is appropriate for your skin (for example, whether your skin is to oily or not). High quality moisturisers also have SPF (Solar Protection Factor), similar to sunscreen which allows you to prevent skin damage by the sun.

3. Change some (bad) habits

Touching your face all the time is a bad habit you should avoid. Your face gets dirt just from air pollution alone. When you put your hands on your face you, you are actually transferring any dirt you may have on your hands directly to your face. This is also valid to the towel or shirt you may clean your face with.

Popping acne pimples is another thing you should avoid. By popping pimples you are creating small cuts in your skin which may lead to more severe infections. It is normal for people to have pimples from time to time. However, if you have severe acne, you should talk to a doctor or a dermatologist which will help you to diagnose your skin and check the best treatment for you.

It is a process

You will notice positive changes when you integrate this 3 step system into your daily routine, specially if you never give proper treatment for your face. Often men overlook skin care because they tend to see as "girls stuff". However, you can make sure your skin will be better, softer and with a healthier if you treat it correctly.

I hope I could help you to start your research on treating your face skin better. Regarding recommendations, I personally use some products from Nivea and Bulldog Skincare brands, however since every skin is different, you need to try to find what works best for you. Check online or in your local store for products that may help you get started. Keep treating your skin nicely and soon you will be able to break the "beauty barrier" so people can notice more what you are and not only what you look like.
