For centuries, archaeologists, writers, historians and many other experts have debated whether Atlantis really existed and - if so - where we could find its remains.

Everything we know about this legendary island comes from two famous dialogues written by Plato, who writes that Atlantis existed 9,000 years before his time. This great naval power in the ancient world, the utopian empire, mysteriously sank one day. Only the legend of an advanced civilized society remains, and centuries later, many archaeologists believe in the story of Atlantis and search for its remains.

Years of searching have led to many theories, and these are the most interesting:

Atlantis was a continent in Atlantic ocean

The idea that Atlantis really existed and that it was not just a legend came to the surface in the 19th century. In 1882, the writer Ignatius Donnelly, in his book "Atlantis, the world before the flood", started this discussion again, writing about the successes of this old world. He states that certain successes of the ancient civilization, such as language, metallurgy and agriculture, could not have arisen without relying on some previous, advanced civilization because the ancient peoples were not able to develop so quickly and successfully. Assuming that the Atlantic Ocean was only a few hundred meters deep, Donnelly described that the continent was submerged by the movement of ocean waters and in the same place where Plato claimed to be. After almost two centuries, this theory still has its supporters.

Atlantis was swallowed by Bermuda triangle

Encouraged by Donelli's theory, many later writers made their assumptions about what could have happened to this place. One of them is Charles Berlitz, the author of numerous works on paranormal phenomena. He also believes that Atlantis was a real continent, but that it was located near the Bahamas, and that it became one of the victims of the Bermuda Triangle, a region in which many ships later mysteriously disappeared. Proponents of this theory point to a phenomenon that resembles artificial walls and is located near the Bimini coast, although scientists in this field have estimated that these structures of natural formation were formed under the influence of waves.

Atlantis is Antartica

Another theory is that Atlantis is actually a version of what Antarctica is today. This theory is based on the work of Charles Hapgud, whose 1958 book "Moving the Earth's Crust" was prefaced by Albert Einstein. According to Hapgud about 12,000 years ago, the Earth's crust displaced a continent that is today Antarctica much further north.

It is believed that this was the first great civilization in Europe adorned with magnificent palaces, the first paved roads, and that the first Europeans to use the written language were here. However, at the height of his power, Minos disappeared from history in a mysterious way that caused the belief that there was a connection between this civilization and Plato's Atlantis. Historians believe that around 1600 BC, a massive earthquake struck the volcanic island of Tire, causing an eruption of millions of tons of rock, ash and gas. The tsunamis that accompanied this eruption would be enough to wipe out entire cities across the region.

Atlantis never existed - Plato invented it

Most historians and scientists have come to the conclusion that this legendary island is only a part of Plato's fiction. According to this theory, Atlantis is just a vision of an ideal society, the story of a hybrid where the gods punish arrogance. There is no other written information about this island than Plato's dialogues, which leads to this conclusion. In addition, despite the modern achievements of oceanography and mapping, no trace of the sunken civilization has ever been found.
