My Commute to Hell, Part 1
So. I used to work for a company in the East India Docks. London. At the time, I was sleeping on a friend's sofa in Woolwich, across the river in South East London. It was a difficult commute, because I had to get one way or the other across the Thames. I often walked, there and back. It was exercise. It took two hours, but I willingly did it rather than suffer the stress of public transport. There were two ways to cross the river - a public ferry from Woolwich to North Woolwich, and a foot tunnel under the river. I used both, many times.
Tate & Lyle
Across the river, I walked past the huge Tate & Lyle sugar refinery, one of the few factories in London still functioning. Then my path took me past BT's International Satellite station. I always felt physically sick, being close to those huge satellite dishes.
London City Airport
I walked past London City Airport, and on to Canning Town, and other East London landmarks, all the way to Blackwall and the East India Docks.
Richard Rogers
My place of work was an ugly building. Designed by Richard Rogers. You know, a horrible black thing, with all the 'plumbing' on the outside. The architectural style was quite the rage at the time. We used to call it the 'Borg Cube'. It was designed as a data centre. It was designed to accommodate floor after floor of computing power. it was never intended to accommodate human beings, apart from some maintenance staff, and it was very poorly suited to the purpose of accommodating human needs.
This shall be continued in another article. There is so much I can talk about. The East India Company - one of the most evil corporations in history. Watch this space.
