There are five main types of nutrients that our food supplies us with: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. All of these substances are essential for the body to function properly.

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. They are found in foods such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. Carbohydrates are important for the body as they help to provide energy for physical activity and help to keep the body's blood sugar levels stable.

Proteins are essential for the growth and repair of cells in the body. They are found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, pulses and dairy products. Proteins are also significant for maintaining muscle mass.

Fats are essential for the body to function properly. They are found in foods such as butter, margarine, oils and nuts.

The food we eat supplies our bodies with substances called nutrients. These nutrients are used by the body for a variety of purposes, including:

- Building and repairing tissue

- Supplying heat and energy

- Protecting the body from disease

- Helping elimination of waste products from the system.

It is significant to understand that not all foods contain the same nutrients, and that the body needs a variety of different nutrients in order to function optimally.
