How does Read decide which wallet the money goes into? Is it based on which device posted the article?

They put it to an account that is only for the website. Afterwards you can send it to the wallet you want
Each device I'm on has its own wallet - I meant, how does Read decided which one of those wallets gets the money. Is it the one that published the story?

I don't know I synchronized all my devices and have the same wallet on each
IIRC, it's based on which device you last accessed read.cash with. Should be in one of those articles I linked you to over on noise.cash.
