So I saw a lot of backlash happening towards the Black and White Challenge.
There are also a lot of misguided posts where girls are simply posting pretty pictures without understanding the rootcause of the movement. Although Women supporting women, women empowering women is a beautiful concept and should not criticized, but lets just get an insight about the real reasons behind this challenge.
It started in Turkey because of their archaic laws towards men who inflict sexual or domestic violence on women. Turkey is one of the top countries when it comes to Femicide and that is based on number of recorded cases. Turkish women are claiming that many cases go unreported and hence the actual number is a lot higher than what is projected as public information. The laws against men who commit these heinous crimes are not all strict. In most cases they get away with a minor slap on the wrist. Its sad to see that men have the power to take away a woman's life and there are no laws to protect the women.
So Turkish women took it upon themselves to make sure the whole country resonates with the fact that they no longer accept the injustices incurred towards them. They want laws, stricter and better laws to ensure safety and security of women in their country. They started the Black and white Challenge because they were fed up of waking to black and white images of dead women who were victims of femicide. These black and white pictures of women on news and social media was becoming a daily phenomenon. The Turkish women decided to unite and raise their voice against unfair laws of their nation. Turkey has the six largest number of followers on Instagram and that worked in the favor of this challenge. It went viral pretty quickly. And in no time at all, the entire female population of Turkey was posting black and white pictures.
From an Bangladeshi woman's point of view also, If I might remind you, we had the same outrage after the nirbhaya incident. Bangladeshi women also protested to get stricter laws for rapists. Even we put the black dot DP to show that we care in general about the safety and well being of women. We were disgusted at the crimes committed towards her. It meant we understand her pain and suffering. It brought the fact to light that we want our government to take action to ensure we won't meet the same fate as her.
Turkish women are trying to do the same! So support them and spread their message as much as you can. Don't forget the meaning behind the challenge. Raise awareness as much as you can. Not all women are strong, independent and courageous like you!
