They looked identical, their names were almost the same and they ended up in the same prison. Their story prompted the beginning of establishing identity by taking fingerprints in America.

When he received a negative answer, the prison officer used anthropometry to examine whether it was the same person. Namely, this method of identification involved the measurement of key physical properties and was considered very reliable.

However, McLaughry then found an identical prisoner who had already served his prison sentence - there was no difference between the two, not even in BertiĆ³n's measures.

Shortly after this event, which pointed to the unreliability of the then methods of identification, the determination of identity on the basis of fingerprints began in America. McLaughry heard that Scotland Yard used a fingerprint as a reliable way of identification, so he presented this technique in the prison where he worked.

Yet it was by no means a novelty at the time. The procedure of taking a fingerprint for identification began in 1858 in India, when Sir William James Harschel insisted that his associates sign business contracts with a palm print. He seems to have had the clearest assumption about the physical characteristics that make us unique even though his method was not based on science.

There is no evidence that they are related. At the time, there was no sure way to find out, but the possibility that they did is not ruled out.
