Feel Bored

Who never says or feels bored? Moreover, recently we met during times when we had to stay at home, not as much mobility as usual. Often we like to scream and say, "I'm bored at home!".

True, or not? But if we want to stop for a moment to think, is boredom always an unpleasant thing? Or is boredom really of no use to our lives? If it is useless, then why do we still use the word bored in our daily life?

Starting from these various questions, I finally decided to find out more about boredom. From a pile of books, journals and articles that I read now I have a different perception of boredom. So far, it turns out that we often misunderstand the bored. We often associate boredom with nothing to do. In fact, we can have a lot of work but still feel bored. Until finally we feel bored not having a positive pole at all and we will get nothing from boredom.

In short, boredom is a condition that comes from two sources.

First, we can feel bored because the activity being carried out is lacking in stimulus. For example, in three hours, we fiddle with the same work. Over time we feel bored because the work reduces brain stimulus.

Second, boredom can arise because the purpose of the activities carried out begins to blur. For example, when we are asked to take part in office training that is not of our own volition. It could be that during the training we just listened, less involved in it. Then boredom arises from the question in my mind, "What is the purpose of me joining this training, huh?". Then the feeling of boredom leads to the understanding that it is a negative thing and we can't get anything out of boredom.

In fact, boredom is an emotion equivalent to happy, angry, annoyed, etc., which is useful for reminding us that we lack stimulus or that we are doing something we don't want to do. Understanding this, boredom has a role to encourage us to explore. Like an alarm, boredom can lead us to seek opportunities for inspiration, interaction, reflection and innovation. However, we must realize that boredom can be unhealthy. It could be a risk for us to get caught up in things that are less constructive. For example, using social media to relieve boredom.

Social media provides very little reward for us to cure "bored". In fact, social media has the potential to reduce our ability to be "bored". We just slide the screen, look at photos and videos, done. Activities on social media often do not provide a solution to boredom. Especially if we don't find space to interact, innovate, seek inspiration and reflection. Basically playing social media to be used as a bored repellent is not a problem. As long as it's not the only way to get rid of boredom.

By understanding the function of boredom in life, we can learn to overcome boredom. It would be nice when we want to express boredom, we can respond to these emotions. For example, by asking yourself: "Do I need to relax first?" "Do I need to chat with friends?", "Why am I doing this activity, what is the purpose?".

Give yourself time to think for a moment. But if you really want to say you're bored because you're really unemployed because there's no activity, that's okay too. It is a good validation if you want to admit boredom. Don't deny it and then force yourself to look for activities that have these four elements (inspiration, interaction, reflection and innovation). Just stay still, rest, while gathering energy to overcome boredom later.
