My child, my legacy.

Heyy y'all... Happy new month❤️✨ I've always loved the month of September. It's my second best month (after February of course 😂). Let's just hope for the best in this new month 💞

A child is a blessing; whether it's a girl or a boy.

Why is a child born? That's a million dollar question.

A child is born for a thousand reasons;

  • Procreation

    According to Genesis 9:7. “And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.”

  • Provision of company to parents

  • As a result of social pressure ;amongst other reasons

In most cases, as the cycle of life goes, parents will give birth to a child, train and take care of the child. Then when the parents become old, the child will be grown enough to take care of his parents.

I came across an article by @HappyBoy recently about living forever. He mentioned three ways

  • write a book

  • sing a song

  • Raise a child

The last part was the best part to me.By having a child, your name lives on for years to come.

For instance, Michael Otedola was a former governor of Lagos state, Nigeria. By having a son( a very successful one at that),Femi Otedola, his legacy still lives on long after he was gone

It was like coincidence to me because the very next day. I heard my mum talk about something similar to it.

She was telling her sister a story of a man who died without having children.

Apparently, he was a very wealthy man. He was married without children for 25 years. And rumours went round that he was impotent because he was involved in occultic practices. Well, his property was taken by his family, leaving his wife with nothing.

25 years??

I asked myself why he didn't adopt a child if he needed one so much. It was then that I reminisced the case of my aunt.

My aunt never had a child. When she offered various pieces of advice considering adoption, she turned a deaf ear. She didn't think of long term challenges.

She's old now without a child to take care of her and pass on her legacy.

Then I realized that people probably had tons of reasons for avoiding adoption.

Solid faith

This is the most common reason amongst couples who grew up as devout Christians. And it really difficult to adopt a child. They strongly believe in "God's time is the best", so they won't consider adopting one as it would seem like they've lost faith in God.

Shame

In the society we find ourselves in, some parents find it indeed shameful to adopt children.

But most times, they are not to blame as they are often encounter people with stupid questions. Like;

Why did you adopt a child?

Fear

This is obviously not because of horror movies like "Orphan" but tales of real life experiences.

Couples are often times, worried about the child's background story and events which led to the child being put up for adoption. In some cases, rumours are spread that a child can be from a witchcraft lineage especially in a situation where the couples are faced with challenges.

Couples also avoid adoption for fear that the biological mother will return to claim the child.

Although, this happens when one undergoes illegal adoption processes.

Culture/ Traditional beliefs

In the Nigerian culture, when a man is unable to get children ( especially male children), it's a significant issue.

Take a traditional Igbo man as an example; he inherits his father's property and has to pass it on to his children.

This should give more reason to adopt one but it is forbidden to in the culture.

These reasons are most often never based on factual information but on archaic claims.

So back to the beginning;

A child is a blessing, whether it's a boy or girl, biological or adopted.

But whatever happens, the child must be raised so that one's name will never die.

Did y'all miss me??? I'm sure you did (lol😂). I was caught was loads of things.

Who else loves the month of September?

I hope y'all enjoy this article and give lovely feedbacks. Xoxo 💞

People won't want to adopt because of what lot of people will say and many can't stand it so they will just have to refuse to accept the offer.

Yesss, I can totally relate. The stigma that comes with adoption both on the part of the parents and the child. But at the end of the day, the child is still theirs, so who cares?

Why didn't he just adopt? I can relate very well to Orphan...lol, it was a really good movie. But just as @HappyBoy said, child adoption is not yet as popular as it is in other countries around the world, perhaps one day

In this part of the world , adoption is seen like an offence. The child is stigmatized and the parents have to bear with constant whispers whenever they pass by.

And it's definitely not an offence...things would be a whole lot better if people minded their business
