Hello everyone, my next article will be a critique about the "Jose Rizal the movie".
For those who wants to watch the movie, kindly search it on youtube. Enjoy!
“Mabuti pang mamatay para sa Bayan kesa mamatay ng wala man lang nagawa para sa kinabukasan nito” (Rizal, 1896). This quotation was said by Rizal during his times of fighting for the Philippines. It was as if he knew his faith after saying those words without hesitations.
The Rizal was a great movie with an amazing productions and talented actors especially led by Cesar Montano, who gave life to the character of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. It was about the life and struggles of Rizal. It was about love, trust, camaraderie and revolution. It has the same intense and feels the Hollywood can produce. It covers the story of Jose Rizal’s life from his childhood up to his execution during Spanish regime in the 19th century. It also shows Rizal’s novels where we had the chance to see on how he viewed the Filipinos during the regime of the Spanish. This was a movie of violence. It shows some scenes from his novels where a friar was raping a Filipina and was hitting a child after committing mistakes. It was a good start to awake the viewers’ emotions and capture their attentions. The cycle of his life started from Paciano, where his brother seen the unjustified execution of Padre Burgos using garrote and started to wake the sleeping will and courage of Rizal to fight for his nation. This film shows the pain and the agony of the Filipinos under the colony of the Spaniards. Where it presents Rizal’s life and imagination (his novels) at the same time.
The movie has a great transition from his life to his imagination. It has an amazing graphics where it seems the movie was true and was shoot during his times. The costumes, props and places was well introduce and use. But it is funny how the Spanish military march, it’s as if they don’t know the proper marching and I don’t know if this was the actors’ difficulty to portray the role or the Spanish military were just like that.
At the middle of the movie, the actors prove that they’re not just actors. They gave justice to every character involves in Jose Rizal’s life. They became the persons itself and portray the roles naturally. There were some flaws but the greatness of the actors never change. They continue to shine even at the last part of the movie. They never failed to deliver the feelings, the real feelings of their character to the audience. Before the movie ended, I observe some flaws with regards on how they communicate in Spanish. The voice were recorded and was played while the actor lip sync. The thing is the recorded voice and the movement of the mouth were not synchronize. But it wasn’t a big deal. It was just my observation.
The movie was ended by presenting the revolution against the Spaniards led by Andres Bonifacio after the execution of Jose Rizal. It shows the solidarity and unity of the Filipinos to the Spaniards. The graphics were great, the blood, fires and everything seems to be real and was presented nice and clean. And other information was flashed after the scene of revolution ended. It was really a big thanks to the writer of the story to think of such a wonderful plot and also to the director, Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya who directed the movie well. Kudos to the actors and actresses and hail to the Filipino movies.
