On 21st April 1867, King George Pepple and chiefs of the Ijaw Kingdom of Bonny reached an agreement with Bishop Ajayi Crowther that the Iguana animal (known as Gidi in Ibani Ijaw language and Abedi in most western Ijaw language) which served as the scared animal or totem of the Ikuba deity should no longer be worshiped by Bonny people. This resulted in the mass massacre of these creatures which have been allowed to roam freely in Bonny eating people's Fowls and other domestic animals with the assurance that nobody can touch them for fear that anyone that dare touches these sacred animals will be mercilessly dealt with by Ikuba worshipers. From that date till today, the Iguana monitor lizard has become just like any other tasty meat to be freely eaten by anyone in Bonny.
