Bedroom Furniture: Arrangement Essentials

Bedrooms are highly personal spaces that provide us not only with a much-needed place for sleep, but also with a place where we can find peace and quiet during the day. So, this room needs to be equally practical and functional as well as beautiful and cosy.

Much of that final result will depend on furniture arrangement. Besides picking out the right pieces and accessories, one of the most important design decision you’ll need to make is how to place it all so it stands in harmony. Luckily, you don’t really need to be a pro to get it right. With a few tips listed here, some willingness and a pinch of creativity, you’ll be able to pull together a bedroom of your dreams.

Just the essentials

You might be tempted to put a lot of things into your bedroom so you would be able to accommodate all your needs, but in essence, you only need a few key items. Trying to squeeze in too much stuff will only create a mess and make the room appear smaller and confined.

This is especially true in a small bedroom where you really don't have any extra space so you need to use fewer pieces. In that case, furniture placement is even more important if you want to create an illusion of a more spacious room. It also helps to use taller shelves and dressers so you can get the much-needed storage without taking up the entire room.

Functionality comes first

The best way to only have what you need in the bedroom is thinking about what you’re going to do. If you have a good idea of what you’re going to want and need to do in the bedroom, you can design around that.

If you watch a lot of TV in bed, find a layout that works well for that. Plan a walkway from one place to another – you don’t want to find the path between the dresser and the mirror blocked when you’re trying to make sure your clothes look right.

Plan first

One thing that’s very helpful is drawing out a sketch plan of various furniture arrangements. In that way, you don’t have the hassle of moving furniture around the room to see what works best. Trial and error on paper will save you a lot of nerves plus there’ll be no scratched floors.

Take measurements of the room and your biggest items, such as the bed, shelves and the dresser and sketch out a few different layouts. If you’re not that confident at drawing, there are great interior design apps that can do the work for you.

It’s all about the bed

Since your bed is the most important item in the bedroom, let that be your first step in arranging the furniture. The most common position is against the largest wall opposite the door, but in smaller rooms that may not be possible.

Find the position that makes the most sense to you but be careful you allow enough room to open and close the bedroom and closet doors. This may sound like you must sacrifice style in a small space, but as King Living new collections shows, it’s quite easy to create a luxurious bedroom sanctuary with the right choice of a bed in the right size, with elegant headboards and generous storage compartments.

Move from big to small

Before you start planning, buying and moving things around, consider the pieces you already have and whether or not you really need them and if they fit your new design plan. Once you've got all mapped out, you can start arranging by moving from your biggest item – the bed to the smaller once.

When the bed is set in its position, move on to the smaller items, such as the bedside tables, dresser, shelves, chairs, desk or anything else you might have. If you have a small bedroom but a larger closet, try to fit your dresser inside it, as it will free a lot of extra space in the bedroom itself.

Place your rugs correctly

Once you’re finished arranging all the furniture, you can think about placing your area rugs. These are great for adding warmth and texture to a bedroom and are most often placed underneath the bed, in the lower two-thirds of the bed, or if you have two smaller ones, at the sides of the bed to give a soft landing for your feet when you get up in the morning.

Experiment and have fun!

These are just some basic guidelines to give you an idea of how you can arrange your bedroom, but that's all they really are, just guidelines. It's up to you to figure out what you want and what works in your space, so don't be afraid to experiment with different styles and layouts until you achieve the look that ticks off all your boxes.
