How to REFUSE or Say NO?

We often face questions to answer yes or no.

• It always happens that your/our best friend or boss asks you to do some extra work, but you/we cannot refuse.

• Requests for additional responsibility sharing may also come from your/our partner or a close family member.

• Sometimes, you/we are bound to do some extra work as you/we are too weak to refuse unjustified requests.

In most of these situations, you/we feel uncomfortable saying no.

How to refuse or say no?

Saying no requires willpower.

• Refusing a close friend, colleague, or family member is a tough decision.

There are a few steps to consider when we fall into an uncomfortable situation of refusing or saying no to a dear one.

(1) Give an apparent reason before turning down a request.

• Highlight your current workload, and explain why it is impossible to help.

• Ask how to share a part of your current workload with a colleague to enable you to accept the requested additional work.

(2) Reframe the opportunities associated with the additional responsibilities.

• Explain why the requested additional work falls outside your skillsets.

• Ask for more time to enable you to learn the required skills.

(3) Explain why a no is in the best interest of all.

• Explain why you can't afford to neglect your current responsibilities and take an additional burden.

• Show why accepting an additional workload would hamper the company's overall functioning and the system or organization.

Conclusion

• Saying yes, or accepting every additional responsibility with a smile may result in severe burnout and health damage.

• Refusing a request may be done gracefully without insulting the requester.

A slight bitterness is a good thing than overburdening self.
