The whole afternoon was full of speculation between the guys about the girls from college, and how they couldn't wait to attend next year. Ethan smiled and laughed at all the innuendos and corny remarks. He himself didn't think he was attending the local college. He had his sights set on a prestigious college worlds away from him and his friends. He was waiting on the acceptance letter from Duke University.
There was a restaurant two blocks from Ethan's house called the varsity. It served hamburgers and hotdogs. Every student from his school had been there at one point or another. On the day those girls from the University drove down Ethan's street, later, Ethan had also decided to eat at the varsity with his friends. It had been later after the episode with the girls. Ethan was just about to bite into his hamburger when he saw one of his fellow classmates walk through the door and collide into the first waitress nearest to the door.
The waitress accidentally spilled coke all over him. Others eating heard the commotion and looked up. Sawyer stood there spellbound and embarrassed over what just took place. He was also horrified because the waitress had spilled coke all over his brand new shirt.
Heated, Sawyer looks the waitress right in the eye and let's out a bunch of insults and cuss words noone would even want their mother to hear, then lunges himself out the same door he just entered. Customers sat there staring after him and the waitress spellbound. Ethan couldn't believe his eyes. It was totally the waitresses fault, and she hadn't even bothered to apologize. Ethan placed money down on the table and excused himself.
"I gotta get home guys. I just remembered I have homework." His friends waved after him as he bolted out the door.
Ethan ran out into the parking lot and looked for Sawyer. No matter how hard he looked, he couldn't find him anywhere.
Ethan found his convertible and flung himself over the door and into the driver's seat. He fished for his keys and cranked his car.
Sawyer has got to be somewhere, he thought to himself. He drove up and down the parking lot looking around for any trace of him.
After combing the lot, Ethan pulled out into the street. He drove up the street looking on both sides searching for any signs of Sawyer.
Ethan drove a block and eventually found Sawyer walking down the street on the left hand side. Sawyer had his hood over his head and his hands in his pockets, and looked as though he were lost in thought. He was walking slowly. Ethan eased over and drove slowly by. It was then Ethan noticed the earplugs in Sawyer's ears. Ethan waved frantically for Sawyer's attention before another car pulled up behind him. Sawyer finally noticed Ethan and pulled his headphones out of his ears. He walks over to where Ethan sat in his car.
"Can I help you?" He asks Ethan incredulously.
"I'm Ethan," he said, motioning towards himself.
Sawyer just looks at him.
"I was just at the varsity where you were. I saw what happened."
Sawyer's eyebrows raised slightly.
"And?" Sawyer asked.
"Well, I was wondering if I could give you a ride home."
Sawyer thought for a moment, then decided to allow Ethan to take him home.
"Sure," Sawyer said. He makes his way to the other side of the car and opens the passenger side door. He hops in, and his eyes light up over being in a convertible. He tried hiding it, but it didn't escape Ethan's notice. Back to Sawyer's place they went.
Sawyer opens the door of the convertible and steps out.
"Is that your car in the driveway?" Ethan asked, motioning towards the black jeep.
"Yes. I walked to the varsity for exercise. I do that periodically."
"Oh ok. Well I figured after what you went through ...... maybe you would want a ride home. I was on my way out the door anyways," Ethan smiled.
Sawyer smiled back.
"Well thank you. I appreciate it. I definitely wasn't too happy after I left."
"Yeah, that girl should be fired for real," Ethan replied.
"Yeah, I agree."
Sawyer turned toward the house. Then he turned back toward Ethan. "Thanks again. I really appreciate it." Sawyer released a rare smile. Ethan had never seen one before from Sawyer, in all the time he had known him.
