We all make excuses! Whether it's because we are avoiding someone or something we tend to rationalize why we are doing it because of fear or because it's just downright uncomfortable!
PROCRASTINATION is no stranger to excuses either. In fact, it is pretty much another word for excuse! We often find reasons to procrastinate, so that we can avoid the situation, but we will rationalize because we just don't want to do it!
Excuses are excuses no matter how you word them or how you see them. People will find an excuse by telling others or themselves that they are just too busy, they don't have time to do it right now, they are too tired, and so forth. All of the excuses in the world won't mean a thing to you or anyone because, in reality, you have no intention of ever doing so!
When you are telling yourself or others you are too busy, most likely you are just using other tasks to blow off that important task you don't want to do.
When you are admitting that you are too tired right now, you are really telling yourself you had the energy to do everything else, but that task you decided wasn't important enough.
You'll find every excuse you can from cleaning to checking your email to social media surfing just to avoid the situation. You will tell yourself you'll do it later, but why wait?
All of those excuses are lies we make up to stay in our comfort zone because we fear the unknown. Stop believing those lies. The world will not end if we step out of our comfort zone and stop making excuses.
Instead of excuses:
Write down your reasons why you are making excuses for a certain situation. Then decide whether that situation is really worth it to you. If it's not something you are ever going to do, then remove it from your life and move on!
Otherwise:
Keep writing down your excuses, even the ones you hope you will eventually come to terms with. The more you are aware of the excuse the more you will start to realize how common that excuse is.
Next, find reasons to resolve that excuse you are making. There will always be a little truth to some reasons like being busy or tired, but it doesn't justify you to simply avoid doing the task! Instead, work around that excuse and prioritize when possible. If your reason is you're too tired, get more rest. If you are too busy, find the time or break it down into smaller steps to make the time! If it's important to you, find the time or kick it out of your life.
If you find yourself believing the excuse, fight those lies, and think differently. Coach yourself if you need to, but stop believing those lies!
Finally, focus on that task you have been finding excuses for by breaking it down into smaller steps. Work five minutes a day on that task if that's all you have to give, but STOP MAKING EXCUSES and GET IT DONE!
