After being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), I decided to try a prescription medication as suggested by my doctor to help with my symptoms. One of the biggest culprits that may affect ADHD symptoms is preservatives and food colorings. Those on the naughty list include FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Red No. 40, butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, and sodium benzoate.
Work it out. One of the best natural treatments for those who struggle with the anxiety side of ADHD is exercise. More specifically, a fitness program that includes yoga. Yoga could help as a tool to aid in relaxation for stress caused by anxiety.
Sunshine can be another great resource for ADHD, especially those with depression and fatigue. The sun is known for its vitamin B benefits which absorb into the skin when exposed to the sunlight.
Some herbs, vitamins, and minerals such as ginseng, magnesium, passionflower, vitamin B6 and zinc may help aid in improving ADHD and its symptoms.
When investing in any herb or supplement, check the labels for added ingredients and ask if they are chemical and pesticide-free. Also, try to purchase vitamins and minerals in capsules that can be opened, rather than pill form.
The reason for this is many companies use binding agents in their pills, which do not allow the vitamin or mineral to break down into your system as it should, resulting in very little to no beneficial nutrients.
You should also consult with your doctor before taking them since some herbs, vitamins, and minerals can cause adverse reactions with other medications you may be taking.
