Every country has urban legends based on their cultures and I have read so many from so many countries but I find Japanese urban legends to be the more creepiest and weirdest among all those. There is something about their legends that feels so real and crazy and most importantly, close to reality....They absolutely give me chills and you will see why it is so scary when you read this post. Today, I'm going to write about just one of the legends in Japan and imagine if this is so freaking creepy and they have some 20 plus craziest legends...let's dive in..
There are several versions of "Kuchisake-onna" aka Slit woman's origin but I'm going to mention 2 or three mostly believed ones... Version 1 goes like, So, there was a woman who was so very supremely beautiful and she was found doing adultery cheating on her husband who was a samurai warrior. Her husband himself saw it and anger build upon him and one day when he came back from work, he went to kitchen, took a knife and carved/cut her mouth from the corner of mouth till ears on both sides. He then said this sentence to her "who will tell you beautiful now??". he left her to die there and obviously because of all the blood loss, she lost her life.
Version 2: Version is not that crazy or creepy except she died because she was getting a medical or dental related treatment which failed and deformed her face... another small version is she was some how found mutilated during her life by a woman who felt jealous of how beautiful Kuchisake looked.
She came back as a vengeful ghost and take revenge on.. these kind of ghosts are also called Onryo... as a Onryo, Legend is been believed that when you walk alone on roads especially at nights you can see a lonely woman walking straight towards you, with a scarf tied across her mouth in this way covering half of her face just like we wear masks now duhhh. She carries a knife or a machete with her or whatever she finds as a sharp object. and she would come straight to you and ask you "do you think I'm pretty?". and if you say yes, she slowly removes her scarf to reveal her huge cut from ear to ear. She again will ask you, "Am I beautiful now?" If you say yes, then she takes a knife and cuts your mouth from ear to ear just like how she has so that she thinks that you would look as beautiful as you think she is. But if you say no, she will just cut your body into half because you just made her angry. So, it is like there is no escape plan when you encounter her and if you choose either yes or no.
But, few people believe that there is chances that you can escape if you encounter Kuchisake....you can tell ambiguous answers to her question like "you are fine" or "you are alright" or "average" except a blunt yes or no, it will keep her in confusion for some time so that you can escape or you might escape or also by throwing her favorite candy made from caramelized sugar at her... she goes to pick the candy while you can run....Or, you might repeat the word "Pomade" three times for her to leave you alone....
Not sure whether this would work or not.... but Good luck to you if you are in Japan and encounter her... Let me know how it went....this story gives me absolute chills no matter what country I'm in right now. If you are too interested an a freak like me, then you can watch a movie based on this Slit woman named "Carved" that was released in 2007...
