The reason why people like old songs
Many people prefer to listen to old songs than new songs. No wonder a lot of old songs from the 80's and 90's were replayed. Did you know that there are psychological reasons why as you get older, you don't really like new songs and prefer old songs?
Citing Stylists, science has shown that human taste in music begins to form from the age of 13 or 14 years. According to a 2018 study from The New York Times, in their early 20s, humans begin to make choices about things they like, including songs. The study also stated that humans tend to stop listening to new music when they reach the age of 30.
"In short, that means the more we are exposed to something, the more we tend to like it," Frank McAndrew, a psychology professor, wrote in The Conversation. "This happens to the people we know, the commercials we see, and, yes, the songs we listen to," he explains.
McAndrew also points out that as we age, humans tend to not have the time to discover and listen to new music which means we are more likely to listen to old songs.
"For many people over the age of 30, work and family obligations are increasing, so less time is spent discovering new music," he says. "In contrast, many will only listen to a familiar old favorite song from a period of their life when they had more free time," explains McAndrew.
