DOWRY!!....
Are you familiar with it? I think most of you are from world top countries. So luckily this notorious system is quite unknown to you.
I am Tamanna from an east country named Bangladesh. Here dowry is very common. Not only in Bangladesh but also in India it is raising day by day.
However, I am clearing this phenomenon. Dowry is the money, jobs, furniture, home (or other things) that is demanded by the bridegroom's family to bride's family during marriage. Here in this man ruled society women are being treated like this: no girl will get married without paying dowry.
From 1980 it is prohibited to give and take dowry in Bangladesh. The government has also passed a "Dowry Prohibition Bill" in 2018. But still people are giving and taking dowries. 3 reasons can be mentioned for it:
Men and women both are equal in the eye of law. But in the eye of society women don't have that much dignity as men have. So bridegroom and his family think that it's their right to take dowry.
Poverty is one of the main reason. Bridegroom's family takes dowry as a infallible means to overcome poverty.
Bride's family are obligated to pay dowry due to their love for daughter.
Dowry is raising and causing to rot the society. The impact is very terrible.
It is introduced that the less the age of a girl, the less the family has to pay dowry. So, for this early marriage is happening so frequent that has a great impact on health.
Again, if the bride's family is unable to fulfill the demands of bridegroom's family, a black curtain of oppression covers the life of the bride. They not only beat her but also kill them. A statistics shows that from the year 2006 to 2012 around 1257 women have been killed due to dowry. Besides suicide, oppression and divorce has been very common. It is also seen that even after 10 years of marriage the bride is oppressed due to unpaid dowry.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is a woman, the speaker of the Parliament is a woman, the opposition party leader is a woman, yet the Bangladeshi woman are treated like goods. They seem to be a burden for the bridegroom's family and to overcome this burden the society has fixed this dowry system though it is completely prohibited in religion and constitution.
However, the good news is people are being conscious of dowry. The government has positive approach against it and also some social movements have already been occurred.
We hope soon the society will heal from this terrible disease.
I hope so too
