Don't Just Jump Into It

Happy Sunday folks. How was service today and hope you had a nice weekend. So, I didn't go to church today (oops!) as I had a commitment to fulfill this morning. Don't look at me like that, I already gave them my word that I'll be there this morning, so I couldn't leave them hanging, even God expect us to stand by what we say, so yes don't give me that look😁.

You know, some of the most inspirational advice making the rounds these days is that you don't have to wait for everything to be right or in place before you set off on that goal, dream, or business of yours. This is great advice in and of itself and I'll gladly give it to others as well as use it myself. The thing about this advice is that, it can be very misleading when people don't know how to apply it.

There's no general rule for everything, and in like manner, there's no advice that applicable across board and in all scenarios. But as humans when we find something that appeals to us, we sometimes just use it as if it applies to everything in the same way; not so friends. There are things you don't just jump into blindly or inadequately.

I'm not saying there are things you have to make sure everything is sure before you start, but there are some things you don't just delve into without getting the required basic knowledge before you set off on it. Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, so they say.

If someone told me that this is what I would be writing about today, I wouldn't believe it, but it all started yesterday. I had a job to carry out yesterday, I was supposed to help a certain farmer sell her fishes. I went there early enough as reared fishes are not as hardened as capture fishes, hence you have to handle them in the early or late hours of the day to avoid stressing them to death.

The buyer was delaying and after a long time, canceled altogether as time was far spent. I came home angry as I had wasted my transport and time that I could have used to do other productive things. The seller pleaded with me to come help her sell it today as she could not afford to keep feeding them, so I agreed, that's the how and why I missed service today.

Being the punctual person I am, I got there as early as anyone could and this time around the buyer showed up and on time and we got to doing the sales. I hated it as I was in the chilling water of the pond, combine that with the Harmattan season we are having and you can guess what I was going through.

While we were on it, the seller's neighbour showed up and was just taking with the woman. Soon enough she announced that she wanted to sell Her's as well. So when we finished with the woman's own, we went to the neighbor's own. Imagine my surprise when I saw fishes that wouldn't weigh more than 350grams in the tanks, and those were the big ones, and these fishes had been cultured for more than three months, can you believe that?

The thing is both of them were sold the same stock, but one was producing fishes of 600grams average weight and she was still complaining they didn't grow well, why the other was turning fishes of less than 300grams average weight.

Why? What Happened?

I looked at the neighbour today and it struck me that she went into the business of rearing fishes because someone told her if the woman could, she can too. I'm not against that. What the person failed to tell her is to acquire the needed education on how to do it properly. Of she truly wanted to rear fishes, she should have done it properly, and the only way to do that is to have acquainted herself with the requisite basic fish tearing skills and knowledge.

She wanted to rear fishes, but wasn't ready to rear them properly and hence she didn't get the required knowledge, neither did she take any of the advice this woman was giving to her concerning proper and adequate feeding, because in her estimation, she was saving cost.

At the end of the day, while the woman sold her fishes and was getting almost $1000, the neighbour got less than a $100 from what was supposed to generated an expected revenue of at least $350. Having balanced accounts, the woman had profit, while the neighbour was running at a loss.

Conclusion

It is true that everything won't just fall in place for you at any one time, hence you have to start with what you've got, but do yourself a favor and ensure you have met a certain good threshold of the requirement before you jump in, so you don't end up wasting your time and resources on a venture and turning up blanks.

Again, nothing is universal in application, not even this advice. It is paramount, that we learn to discern and know when to apply what knowledge and what wisdom.

This is the reality especially in business. And it is very common in me-too business. Imagine a woman going into provision store business because her friend in another street is into it t and making it... If there are like four to five women in same business in her street, then definitely she wouldn't make much money from the business because its already saturated in her area.

This one is even worse. Just jumping on a business because someone is doing it and it's working without asking yourself why

This is exactly why they often tell people to do their research before getting into any business. To a business venture to be successful adequate knowledge is required

Exactly. Especially when it's a matter of business, don't just gamble on it or be lackadaisical about it
