Say no to food wastage.
Mother nature is so kind to us, one of it kindness is how it provides food for us. We might feel like the food we eat is the reward of our labor, there is no doubt about it but have you thought about how the seeds we plant turn into food for us? It is magical right, that’s a secret mother holds.
My dad use to teach me that food sacred, not to be worship but to be respected and used properly. It sounds funny saying that food should be respected, after all we bought with our money. If we don’t use our food properly then we are hurting nature which we will later suffer for it, it surprises me to know that the food that goes into the garbage every year would still feed hundreds of thousands of people, this got me wondering why people choose to waste instead of sharing when they have excess.
We had a tradition in my family when my dad was alive; he was a strict man yet loved because everything he does is accompanied with love. The tradition was that we don’t make another meal where there is a left over from the previous meal; we must finish one before preparing another meal. The only time we violated the rule was when he travels for work, his favorite son would still hint him when he comes. The rule made us very careful with cooking; we definitely won’t prepare more than we wanted. It is better for us not to be satisfied than have left overs.
After he passed on, years passed and we started forgetting those legacy. It meant nothing at the beginning but we were gradually realizing that we were more than what we were doing when dad was alive; we exhausted our monthly food stuff in two weeks.
It got so bad to an extent that mom started complaining bitterly, it wasn’t an task for a widow to care for three kids, we had to adjust and those lessons were very helpful for us even when were in higher institution.
My friends and roommates are always having this surprise look when they see how I manage my food and provision, that was possible because of the self discipline and the lessons my father taught the family.
I usually talk to parents about it as well, letting kids know that wasting food is bad because we don't know how much time we will be spending with them so doing the right at the right time is what we should do. Let them learn how to manage their food rather than wasting because there are possibility of not having surplus everyday.
What am I trying to say?
Wasting food is very terrible thing, it is better to share when you have more than enough for yourself. There are lots of hungry people out there, share your leftover with them instead of letting them end in the garbage. That would show how much you respect nature, it means you are a symbol of hope and you will be bountifully rewarded by the Almighty God.
