World on the brink of war - China and DPRK

Recently, I read some very interesting news regarding the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (or as we know it North Korea) and China. Four days ago Express.co.uk gave an astonishing title Brink of WW3: North Korea and China CLASH in deadly sea battle – Kim covers up chaos. Can it be true? The answer is more complex to be explained in few words.

Theoretically speaking, it is not possible. Practically, it is impossible. Below, I will analyse step-by-step what happened in this incident and what are the consequences. In conclusion, I will describe why the start of World War 3 is just gibberish.

The incident: in July 2020, several Chinese boats attacked a North Korean boat. The incident resulted in the disappearance of some North Korean sailors, because they were thrown overboard. The official statements from North Korea and China said that the cause of the altercation was financial. China sent boats to fish in the territorial waters of DPRK and the North Korean authorities were patrolling the area in order to protect the North Korean waters.

China – North Korea relationship: China is the traditional ally of North Korea. China “saved” North Korea in the Korean war (1950-1953) from the US “hegemonic and expansionist” foreign policy. Nowadays, China is the most important trading partner for Pyongyang. Once with the increase of Pyongyang's nuclear intentions, we have witnessed some tensions between China and North Korea. China even sanctioned its neighbor for not respecting the nuclear agreements signed by North Korea with the international community.

As a conclusion, the incident between the Chinese vessels and North Korea will not bring the two countries at war. North Korea cannot survive without the support of China:

  1. Economically speaking, North Korea survives thanks to Chinese money – financial aids and exports.

  2. Militarily speaking, North Korea is protected by China.

  3. Politically speaking, the North Korean regime is supported by Beijing and the Kim dynasty owes a lot to China.
