It is not only corrupt African leaders who want to stay in power forever. Some European leaders do same. How can one person alone be in power for 25 years. Is the presidency his birthright?? With Russia being his ally, he seems to be above any criticism. The Belarusians should continue fighting for their rights and a democratic country. The will of the people can overcome any dictatorship.
Belarus is a former Soviet Republic that gained its independence in 1991, after the the fall of the Berlin War and the dismantlement of the Soviet Union. Since 1994, the country is ruled by Alexander Lukashenko, a modern-world dictator. Now, he is going for his 6th consecutive term as President of the country.
2020 seems to be the year of people fighting back. So many countries protested against their government. People are tired and ready for a change and know that people hold the power. Amazing!
Belarus is in hard time trust that ...
The opposition leader dosing accept the vote, at the same time she left the country for her safety.
I don't know what the EU ready to deal with him but he's ready to fight with them, any time they cross his border.
An Open Letter to UN Secretary General:
The recent ‘sham’ election in Belarus and subsequent police oppression on the people in general, and the opposition activists in particular, should be an eye-opener to the conscientious people around the world as to what a ‘police state’ can do in the name of ‘democratic’ election. Such anti-people practices may be the latest in Belarus, but there are hundreds of such repeated ‘democratic practices’ well across the continents: in countries ruled by the military dictators, facist elements, and even by the so-called ‘democratically elected’ rulers. Once they ‘occupy’ the citadel of power, they devote all of their power and energies to build up oppressive state machineries that ensure their rule years after years, while the deprivation and sufferings of the general people — the tax-payers! — keep on mounting! .... The recent-most events in Lebanon are also a pointer to how a corrupt ‘elites’ forming the ruling junta can destroy a country. Even in the United States, it is increasingly being feared that President Trump would force his way to win November election at any cost, even if democracy is damaged!!!
The ‘comedy of the tragedies’ is also manifested elsewhere: the ‘partnering’ governments would keep an blind eye to the facist activities of their ‘pet ruling cliques’, would ‘tolerate’ their tempering with democratic practices, and what not!
The United Nations has the mandate to ensure democratic practices and rule of law, justice to all, safeguarding the rights and entitlements of all the citizens of the member-states. However, in reality the Organisation owing to its structural deficiencies has so far failed to prove equal to its mandated tasks. Even sometimes it appeared to be complicit to the unfortunate happenings around!
Welfare of the PEOPLE is contingent upon their proactive participation in matters that affect their lives and livelihood, and it is precisely the reason the democratic norms and rule of law must be ensured. Thus, it is high time the United Nations should establish an independent watchdog agency under its jurisdiction to review and recommend binding steps towards establishing a democratic polity in all the member-states. Any decision(s) taken by the proposed agency should be passed with simple majority vote in the Security Council, without any veto power of the so-called Permanent Members.
I would urge the UN Secretary General to ponder on this vital issue so as to prevent any possibility of its member-nations becoming a bunch of simple ‘police states’!!!
