Sleep has their own stages, while sleeping youre jumping from rem to non-rem mode.
REM- fast eye movement, your eyes move quickly in different directions.
non-REM -nothing suspicious is happening to your body
First part is non-REM sleep, after that the shorter period of REM sleep incoming, and then the proces simply repeats. We can split non-rem into 3 phases:
1. your eyes are closed but still it is easilly to wake you up (usually lasts 5-10 minutes)
2. youre in relaxing faze of sleeping where your heart slows down also your body temperature drops a bit
3. in this stage you sleep like a bear and its hard to wake you up. The deep sleep process can be interrupted by third party only when he really try hard
In the deep stage of sleep human body is getting self regenerated and also start the self-repair proces. Old humans sleep more lightly and its harder for them to reach depp sleep stage. Thats why older humans not regenerationg well theirs own body while sleeping. Usually starts after one hour - hour and half of your sleep . First stage of rem last about 10 minutes every next stage of rem is getting longer and longer in time, last one can lasts up to one hour. At stage of rem human brain is more active and you can have intense dreams, for examply you flying in your dream into the sky, then suddenly you start falling down your heart is bumping faster and faster till you woke up from this nightmare
Still the biggest sleepers in the world are cats. They have mastered sleeping to perfection, they sleep 75% of their lives, while people only 25%.
