I want to make a short introduction about mulch. It is a summer season and some of us like to spend time planting and gardening. For those who do not know what is mulch, but like to grow plants either in garden or indoors I want to give you an idea of what it is and what it does. Mulch in basic terms is a practically any kind of plant based bio mass. Most popular to use are straw and wood chips, but any kind of plant material that is not toxic can be used. The mulch of a chosen kind is layered on top of soil where plants grow. Thickness can be approximately from 5 cm to 15 cm depending on the plant and where it grows indoors or outdoors. It is important to note that mulch should not cover the plant and its leaves. Now as we have basic knowledge of what mulch is and how to mulch plants we can learn about what kind of magic it does. First of all it retains moisture for plants therefore reducing the need for often watering. Secondly, mulch creates a natural biosphere with bacteria and fungus that is often found in nature. It is important to understand that bacteria, fungus and plants work together and benefit one another. We can observe this fenomeno in nature. Last thing I want to mention is weeds. Because mulch bloks the sun on the soil it is much more difficult for unwanted weeds to compete with wanted plants, saving time needed to weed out the plant. In conclusion I want to say that instead of trying to grow plant, better grow soil. If soil is healthy your will be too and give healthy produce.
