After about 30 minutes of walking around in the rain just to get recharge card for Mercy, I finally made my way home.
*Knock Knock*
No answer
I knocked the door twice again but still no one answered then I did what I had to do, I called out Mercy is name.
âMercy?! Mercy?!! Please open the door!â I yelled as I continued to bang the door but still I got no reply.
I was about to knock on the door again when it suddenly opened
âI heard you shouting what happened?â Mercy questioned rudely
âSo you heard me?â
âMercy this isnât nice! And you know itâs raining heavilyâ
âSo? Are you allergic to rain? Is it not water that falling from the sky? What if itâs fire?â
âMercy can you please tell me what I have done to you and your mom to deserve this ill treatment from both of you?
You were so sweet and kind when we were much younger, what happened to you? I am certain that youââ
âStory for the gods!â Mercy said
âJust put yourself in my shoes Mercy and I pray youâll realise that what youâre doing to me is not human. Let me come inâ
âCome into whose house? Your fatherâs house?â Mercy said
âWhy are you doing this? Have I not suffered enough in your hands already?!â I yelled, tears threatening to fall down my pale cheeks.
âYouâre yelling at me? How dare you? This us my fatherâs house remember? I decide whether you come in or notâ Mercy said
âI know itâs your fatherâs house and I have no right to tell you what to do but please pity my condition and let me come in.
Canât you see that Iâm shivering?â She eyed me maliciously and opened the door widely for me to enter.
âThanksâ I murmured quietly as I embraced the warmth that welcomed me.
âIdiot, did I not send you on an errand? Whereâs my recharge card?â
âIâm sorry, have itâ I murmured and handed it over to her.
âWhy is it wet?â She asked
âReally Mercy? You just asked me why it is wet? Really? Itâs raining for crying out loud!â I yelled in frustration.
âYou should have protected it from getting wet idiot!â She yelled back
âAnd how do you expect me to do that? Command the rain to stop falling? Like oh! Dear rain stop falling.
I donât want Mercyâs recharge card to get wetâ I replied sarcastically
âYou areââ she started but Aunty Estherâs shrilling voice cut her off
âWhatâs going on here!â
I opened my mouth to say something but she placed a finger on her lips which means I should keep quiet.
Then she spoke âIâm talking to my daughter not you. Tell me what Happened Mercyâ
âMommy, I asked her to get recharge card for me and she spent over an hour before she came back into this houseâ Mercy lied
âNo ma, sheâs lying! I didnâtâ-â
âWill you keep quite? Shut up your mouth and let Mercy talked!â
âDespite the fact that she came back late I didnât get angry but she insulted me mom this girl insulted me! She called me a witch,
A spoilt brat and all sort of names and to crown it all, the recharge card I asked her to get for me is wet! How does she want me to use it?â
âDonât mind her dear, sheâs the witch and trust me dear I know just how to punish herâ Aunty Esther said with venom laced in her voice
âI trust you momâ Mercy squealed excitedly and you just stood there, dreading what her punishment would be.
âOh Lord, please take controlâ I silently prayed
âI heard that Aunty Esther said, smirking.
âHeard what?â I asked, confusion evident on my face
âI heard your prayers, you said âoh Lord, please take controlâ she mimicked and my eyes widened in surprise.
âWas I that loud?â I asked
âYes and im not sorry to say this, your prayer canât be answered because I am in control of your life!â She said with a wicked grin on her face
âJust because you feede doesnât mean youâre in control of my life. You didnât create me and you definitely canât control my lifeâ I argued
âJust wait and seeâ
âMom, what are we going to do about my recharge card?â
âOh! She should get another one for you, with her money of courseâ
âThatâs sounds like a good ideaâ
âBut aunty Esther, itâs raining heavily and I donât even have any money. The fact that the card is wet doesnât mean she still canât use itâ I said
âOh youâre telling her what to do? Youâre dictating for my daughter in her fatherâs house?â Aunty Esther said
âNo ma, I was justâââ
âShut up! If you know you still want to stay in this house, you must get another recharge card for her and I donât care if you have money or not!
If you like beg for alms or steal just donât steal Mt moneyâ she said
âPlease aunty Esther, donât make me do this, please pity my conditionâ I pleaded, tears streaming down my face
âPity what? Excuse you? Am I the one that got you pregnant? Or is it myâ-â
âMom, this is what I warned you about! I told you not to take this girl in now sheâs giving us headacheâ Mercy interjected
âI bought her in so that she could assist us in the house. You know run errands for us, do the house chores and cook.
I never knew she was going to be this lazy. Donât worry okay? Sheâll get a new recharge card for you whether she likes it or notâ
âAunty Esther I swear, I donât have any money!â I pleaded
âI donât care! Now get out and donât come back into this house with the recharge cardâ
âButââ
âI said get out! Leave now before I do something youâll hate for the rest of your life!â She yelled angrily and I quickly scurried away.
