There are few things that are cuter as a parent than your full-cheeked infant or your toddler's chubby knees. However, for some kids, the cute baby fat can turn into a health concern.

Today, almost one out of four children and teenagers are overweight or obese in developing countries. Those extra pounds put children at risk, including diabetes, heart disease, and asthma, for developing serious health problems. An emotional toll is also taken by childhood obesity. Kids who are overweight also have difficulty keeping up with other children and engaging in sports and activities. Other children, leading to low self-esteem, negative body image, and even depression, can tease and exclude them.

It's easy to feel depressed or powerless if you're watching your child struggle with their weight. But there's plenty you can do for your child to support. As early as possible, diagnosing weight issues and obesity will minimize the risk of your child having severe medical conditions as they grow older. And you can break the cycle of weight issues and obesity, improve the physical and mental health of your child, and help them develop a healthier relationship with food that will last a lifetime by getting the whole family involved. Let them know that you love them and that all you want to do is help them be safe and happy, regardless of your child's weight.
