The secret of happiness can be hidden in one thing
Could the key to happiness in life be hidden in one thing? Maybe yes… We all want to be happy. However, it may not be possible to achieve happiness by focusing only on the things that we think will bring happiness or by thinking positively. On the contrary; Focusing so much on finding happiness can increase unhappiness…
In other words, being autonomous, being independent, listening to the voice of one's own free will makes one feel happy. According to Atsushi Kukita, a psychology expert at the University of Claremont, who led the research, autonomy creates a sense of action, not a sense of commitment. This situation sees more value in the society and supports both individual and social happiness.
Experience sampling method was used in the research, which examined the connection between autonomy and happiness. In this context, the participants were asked to take notes at different times of the day (6 times a day) for seven days. For these notes, participants were asked to answer questions such as what they were doing at the time and how they were feeling.
As a result of the research, what determines happiness; It was determined whether the people participated in the activity of their own free will, not what they were doing at that time. Another interesting result of the research is that it is more meaningful when people participate in relaxing activities of their own free will. So, for example, although meditating contributes to one's search for meaning and awareness; One can only increase awareness when they do this autonomously and with their own free will.
How do you become autonomous?
Incorporating autonomy into life provides happiness in the long run. However, it is certain that everyone has some obligations in life. Going to work, taking care of children, taking care of home… Of course, it is possible to be happy by fulfilling responsibilities. In such cases, it is necessary not to seek happiness, but to know how to be happy with what is done.
If the job you work for does not satisfy you even though it provides you with countless opportunities, it is almost impossible to be happy there. You don't have to fall in love with your job, but if you want to be happy with your job, you must find elements that will satisfy you. What you do needs to be something that interests you.
Most importantly; You have to discover your own individuality. You must remind yourself that you are an individual, that you have decisions and preferences, and that they have value. You can search for autonomy in all areas of life and try to reach it. Your job, your relationships, your choices in life, your leisure activities are just a few of them.
You have to remind yourself that you have options. Sometimes, even when you think you have no choice, you can create a way out for yourself by improving yourself and gaining new skills. All you have to do for this is to open and hold your perception and look around you.
