Redefining The Time Management Challenge.

0 7

I started this article with the sentence, “The reason why the mother's work is never done is because mother's work has been inaccurately defined.”

So what is the more accurate description of our time-management challenge?

As I was trying to organize the insights I have learned from my consulting work and the insights and the insights I have learned with my wife and many other moms, I wanted to organize the concepts in this article as linearly as possible, Hoping to make the understanding and applying of this time-management philosophy as easy as possible.

I struggled with it for a while, because the nature of our time-management dilemma is not linear.

The easiest way to understand our time-management challenge is to look at it from a weaving metaphor.

When weaving in the loom, there is a row of yarn that is placed vertically in the loom.

These rows of yarn are collectively called the warp.

The collective width of this vertical rows of yarn determines the width of the fabric.

Each yarn that will make up the warp has to be strong enough to withstand being stretched and placed under tension.

It's important to note that it takes effort just to get the warp set up, Before the designs can be woven in.

The yarn that crisscrosses at right angles or perpendicular to the warp yarn to create the design of the fabric is called the weft.

The warp and the weft are equally important for the strength and integrity of the fabric.

The warp and weft complement each other.

Without one or the other, The fabric will unravel, And you will be left with just a lump of yarn.

If the warp and weft are properly woven, they can form a strong and beautiful fabric.

As we apply this metaphor to time management, The weft represents all the activities we want to accomplish. Much as the weft come in different designs and colors, We can choose to participate in any activity we want and design our lives however we want.

In weaving, The width of the warp can make the weft as long as you want.

The length is shorter when you are making scarves and obviously longer if you are making blankets.

Similarly, The activities and goals we decide to take on can be as long or as short as we want.

Longer doesn't necessarily mean better. It just depends on what it is you are trying to build.

In our weaving metaphor, The warp represents our character.

Much as the warp gives the fabric it's strength, So our Character gives our lives strength.

Just as fabric can wear out quicker and unravel if we don't give our character enough of our time to set up properly, To focus sufficiently and develop fully.

°°° Character is that which reveals moral purpose, Exposing the class of things a man chooses and avoid.

Consider the lives of the so-called famous and successful people whose fame, Fortune, And success are replaced with scandal, Lost fortunes, Damaged reputation, And broken families, Because their integrity of character has been compromised.

Such a tale is of course not limited to those who make headlines, But we are all subject to the same forces.

Our lives can also unravel if we don't give sufficient focus on developing our character as well as achieving goals and completing our to-do lists.

We are redefining our time-management challenge as, “How do we balance our time between developing character and using unique talents in ways that would make masterpieces of our lives?”

This article is about using our time to weave together the warp of character and the weft of activities and goals.

Just as a woven tapestry can beautify a room by it's presence, So can we live lives of inspiration for others and fulfillment for ourselves when we build a culture of being more and not just doing more.

I think mothers are the best, no offense if you're a dad. But the mother's work is never done, especially one with many kids.

Metaphors, when they are good, can be the best way to make something clear; and this was a really efficient metaphor for its purpose. Well done!
