In this allegory of the oxen pull, The importance of the voice of the trainer cannot be overstated.
If the winning combination of the oxen pull is individual strength and teamwork, The voice of the trainer affects both.
After this big set up, What is the voice of the trainer?Character!
The formation of one's character ought to be everyone's chief aim.
I believe the reason why character should be everyone's aim is because it helps us to pursue perfection and be the people we want to be.
When I say perfection, I'm not referring to being free of faults or weaknesses.
Too many of us get caught up in this definition and goal of being free of fault.
When looking at the 13th century definition of the adjective perfect, It means complete.
The 14th century definition of the verb perfect means to bring to full development.
When we are choosing to be governed or trained by the voice of character, We are choosing words, Natural laws, Or principles that help bring our lives to full development.
The application of these words, Helps to bring out the very best—the divine—within us.
When we weave character development into all of our activities, (Remember the warp and weft in my weaving analogy) We are piloting our lives to a culture of being more and not just doing more.
Staying with the weaving analogy for a moment, There is a legend and phrase called the Persian flaw.
The legend says that in ancient times, The rug makers in persia were a deeply-religious people.
They believed that God is perfect.
To show their devotion to God, When they made their rugs, They would deliberately include a small faulty stitch, A flaw, Into each Persian rug.
Similar legends exists in Asia as well as in North and south America.
These flaws don't make these rugs less valuable, But more valuable.
Though not perfect (Without flaw), These rugs are valuable, Because they were made with great care and skill.
Isn't that what we all want—to live a life with purpose to which we give our very best efforts, Even if there is an occasional flaw? Then in the midst of doing the very best we can, Our character is strengthened and refined.
Our character is really just another part of who we are, And we need to nature and develop it as we would our body or mind and every other part of who we are.
Choosing to be governed by powerful character words will help us to be complete or perfect.
These powerful words need to be near, Clear, And familiar to us.
We need to hear and apply these words with at least the same deliberate consistency as compering voices who shout their bad advice.
Let us consider at least one character word that can help us to be perfect.
That word is: pre-forgiveness.
