Why is Goblin Slayer a mediocre anime
I, like many others, discovered this anime when it came out in the fall of 2018, and it set the bar for anime as a whole from the very first episode. After the first episode, the audience response was overwhelming. Anime with such violent content in terms of violence is not that rare, but still not very popular, as an exception I can remember the recent Invincible, which came out last year, although it is not an anime, but in general in dismemberment and blood even exceeds Goblin Slayer, but here too there are reservations. The violence in Invincible - combined with bright visuals - quickly becomes commonplace and you stop noticing it.
The main thing that shocked the audience in Goblin Slayer was the rape. I would even say that this is the only thing people can remember from this anime. After watching the anime, I decided to read the manga, and let's just say the author really likes to emphasize it. This is neither bad nor good, the problem is the misstatement of the narrative
If Goblin Slayer were a hentai, there would be no question, but it is not and claims to be a serious work in the dark fantasy genre. In my opinion, the anime exhausted all its potential in 1 episode, after which you can safely not watch the other 11.
Now about the problems and why I think Goblin Slayer is a mediocre piece of work. First, let's start with the main idea. It's not bad at all - a guy in dirty armor who looks like Doomguy is setting up a genocide of goblins in narrow caves. Sounds good, but it raises another question - how do we make sure that people don't get bored of watching the same thing? The author couldn't answer it, well, he tried by adding new monsters and locations. Did it change the overall picture? - No.
Second, the characters. They're boring as hell. Seriously, it's a 100 level of hackneyed. Clichéd characters and no character development. Okay, they change a little on the "She used to be afraid of blood and goblins, but now she's not afraid to fight" level. As for their characters, they don't change. I also want to note the author's interesting decision regarding the names of the characters. There are no names.
There just aren't any! I understand what he wanted to achieve - the effect of participation and empathy, so that everyone could either come up with their own names for the characters, or put themselves in their place. Did it work? - No. Does it look weird when they address each other "Hey priestess, hey archer, hey shaman"? - Yes.
As for the overall atmosphere of the world, hmmm, let me think, this is probably the most standard fantasy world with a guild of adventurers that has been created in the last 10 years in myriad ways. Goblin Slayer isn't even in the dark fantasy genre, it's just a fantasy world with mass rape, bruh.
The soundtrack and the openning are on a good level, the overall visual design of the anime isn't bad either, some moments are even memorable. Otherwise, everything else is average or low quality. Oh yeah, I almost forgot that there's quite a lot of fanservice here, so keep that in mind and stock up on napkins, my little perverts.
My final score is 6/10, you can watch Goblin Slayer, you might even get some pleasure out of watching it while sipping a beer and having a snack, but that's about all it can do. If you have a choice between watching Goblin Slayer and Tokyo Revengers (I would give them a 7/10 rating), choose Revengers.
You can write your opinion about this anime if it coincides or not with mine, I'm happy to read your comments and answer any questions. :3
