The media is a mirror of social life. It is now a part of our lives, society. The influence of the media at the present time is undoubtedly universally recognized. One day history of the world we live in is the subject of the media of that day. Every moment, every work, every small incident of our ongoing life is reflected in the media. That is why the media is inextricably linked with life and society. On the one hand, the media is portraying the current image of the society and on the other hand, it is breaking, building and influencing the conventional social system.
★History of the media:
The first regular newspaper was published in Germany in 1809. In 1802, the Daily Quarantine was the first daily newspaper in Britain. The first newspaper in the Indian subcontinent was published in 180 under the name 'Bengal Gazette'. The first newspaper published in Bengal was the Bengal Gazette in 1818. Rangpur Bartabah was first published in 1847 in the then East Bengal. The discovery of radio in 1894, film in 1919 and television in 1925 revolutionized the world of mass media. The first radio broadcast in Bangladesh started in 1939 and TV broadcasting started in 1984.
★Types and uses of mass media:
There are three types of media in terms of publication and dissemination. First, print media such as newspapers, books, magazines. Second, electronic media such as radio, TV, movies. Third, ‘new media’. This is a new idea about the media. The incredible success of information technology has resulted in various active and effective means of communication. Such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. Their features and role are much like other media. So these are called new media. This includes online newspapers. The use of media in our lives has now become an inevitable issue. We wake up in the morning reading magazines, listening to the radio to get instant news, watching TV. I am using radio, TV, movies, books to entertain in my spare time. People mainly use the media for four purposes. To learn information, to learn about something, to be entertained and to be motivated. Now most people around the world use one form or another.
★Responsibilities of the media:
The media has some responsibilities towards the society and culture and the people of the country. The responsibility of the media is to bring the conventional social system in front of everyone. So that man can know his society properly. It is also the responsibility of the media to highlight the existing inconsistencies. One of the responsibilities of the media is to provide accurate and precise information to the people through honesty, objectivity, balance and high level of professionalism. It is the responsibility of the media to inform the people about the ideals, values and culture of the society by being self-controlled from within the existing institutions and legal framework of the society. It is the responsibility of the media to refrain from disseminating information on crime, violence and public discontent.
★Impact of the media:
At present, due to the extreme excellence and role of the media, we have become much more media-oriented. As a result, we are constantly being influenced by the media. The media keeps people informed about the current situation. People are being informed of everything that has happened in a moment. The influence of the media on people and society is so great that the media can look at any issue of the people in a positive way and also in a negative way. When the United States invaded Iraq, the Western media reported that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. And that is a threat to world security. As a result, public opinion was formed in favor of the attack. But later it was seen that this propaganda of the media was wrong. The media can create a mass awakening among the people. Again, the media can create chaos and anarchy in the society with wrong and distorted information. The media can make even a small issue bigger through its presentation.
★Freedom of speech, democracy and the media:
The media ensures the freedom of speech of the people. When the media runs freely, can establish freedom of speech, can speak on behalf of the people, then naturally it can be assumed that there is democracy. That is why the media is called the prerequisite of democracy. The media consolidates democracy. And the independent media is the manifestation of democracy. Everyone in the world has the right to freedom of expression. The media creates a place for people to express their views. In addition, the ruling group and other political figures and state activities are brought before the media. In this way, everyone has to face accountability. So they have to think about the country and the ten. As a result, the foundation of democracy is also solidified.
People have a strong attraction towards the media. Information from the media is a great source of our knowledge. Because of the media, we know right now what is happening in the world. Even though it happens far away, everything seems to be happening right before our eyes. That is possible only for the welfare of the media. But this media is as positive as it is negative for us. So as human beings we have to decide with our own judgment that we will be influenced by some aspects of the media.
Most media outlets these days have failed in their responsibility of providing correct information to the public. The trend these days seems to be to publish or report stories that will gain maximum attention or clicks and not necessarily the truth. I am not surprised though, a villian once said in one of the Bond movies, there's no news like bad news.
