I once had a dog. Oreo was his name.
Oreo came into my life like a thief in the night and left without warning.
After the death of my dog Terry,my parents were determined not not keep a dog again. But, fate has a way of getting things done.
My father came home with a beautiful puppy, one evening. The puppy was Oreo.
I fell in love with him immediately I saw him. He had a soft fur, tender toes and a sparkling eyes coupled with his black and chocolate colour. The bond between us was a priceless one. It was filled with love.
Oreo loved to hunt down animals in our compound. Times without number, he killed rats. Oreo won't eat his games until we see it, then roast it for him and tell him to go ahead and feast. He was a good boy.
He'll patiently sit beside his game till we are back home.
Aside from rats, he was a lover of Lizards. Yes! Lizards. He loved his territory and won't permit strangers to loiter around. He made our compound lizard free. Whenever the lizards comes near Oreo, it always ends on a sad note for the lizard. It's either he kill them or injure them, and if they are lucky, escape.
I've been stopped many times by my neighbors all because of Oreo. They thought he was a foreign breed, whereas he was local. Oreo loved eating a lot. And he is never filled. He is always eating. His eating habit yielded a good result. He was bigger than most local dogs. Bigger and beautiful. People dare not come into our house anyhow, his massive size scares people away.
People coming into our house had to call either my number or my mum's before they could enter. Even before entering, I'll need to hold Oreo with his chains.
The way he barks is on another level. With his characters, people thought we had a foreign dog in our compound.
Anytime I come back from an outing, the way he welcomes me sends loads of love to my heart, it's like he's always trying to say, "Hooman, you took long to come back, why? Don't leave me again" With his adorable eyes. Our play time is always a rough one and interesting.
One particular Sunday afternoon, I was taking pictures and Oreo decided to be a photo bomber. He made sure he appeared in all my pics with his beautiful smile....his smiles was heart warming and captivating.
Suddenly, he started eating less, and was no more active. I was worried. He didn't visit my room every morning like he used to do whenever he doesn't see me outside on time. Even after coming out, he doesn't run to jump and give me kisses.
A vet was called and he was treated. After two days, he was back to his normal self. Sadly, it was for a while. Before I left for school, he fell sick again. He lost his colours, his agility, and was lean. He couldn't eat anymore. All treatment given to him failed.
Unfortunately, a month after I got to school, I was told my beloved and sweet Oreo died. It was a tough time, I cried, I couldn't eat. I miss my Oreo and I hope we'll meet at the rainbow bridge with my other cute dogs who developed wings and flew to heaven.
