Post-Apocalyptic Anime

-refers to anime sub-genre where humanity is in the verge of extinction because of various reasons like war, nuclear meltdown, natural disaster or even alien invasion. It is based from its word itself "Post" which means after and "Apocalypse" an event that cause cause destruction to large part of the world.

This type of genre usually took place in a futuristic place where humans is struggling for survival after an apocalypse.

Top 10 Post-Apocalyptic Anime

This type of genre is my favourite in anime. I believe that you can see different kinds of person when they are in danger. And here my Top 10 Post-Apocalyptic Anime.

10. Guilty Crown

  • Episodes: 22

  • Year: 2011

  • Studio: Production I.G

This anime took place in the future (2039) where it is already 10 years after the outbreak of a mysterious disease called "Apocalypse Virus", which puts humanity in the verge of extinction. The once so called great nation of Japan has been fallen to hands of GHQ, an independent military force which uses cruel method just to maintain the peace and order of the country. Only the guerilla group named "Funeral Parlor" has the guts to oppose the cruelty of GHQ. With the main character Inori Yuzuriha, the key member of funeral parlor, along with the once so called weak Shou Ouma which accidentally obtain a power that might save humanity will find a way to put down the tyrant of the military and solve the mystery of the deadly disease.

This anime has good back story with great animation and beautiful charactet designs. Thats why It take my Top 10 Spot.

9. Darling In The Franxx

  • Episodes: 24

  • Year: 2018

  • Studio: A-1 Pictures, Trigger, Cloverworks

Like on the one above, this anime also took place in the future. A giant beast known as "Klaxorous" has put humanity in a situation to desperately fight for their survival sorrounded by giant fortress cities. Childrens are raised solely for the purpose of piloting a giant mecha called "Franxx" to fight Klaxorous without the knowledge of the outside world. But everything change when a boy named Hiro run away to a nearby lake because of frustration that he failed his aptitude test has coincidentally met a mysterious girl with two horn with the code name Zero Two. The two has been paired in the Franxx and gives light to the future of humanities.

This one is somewhat similar to the first one except this is more in romance. Its plot is good and you'll love the characters.

8. High School of the Dead

  • Episodes: 12

  • Year: 2010

  • Studio: Madhouse

This one is based on the most famous type of apocypse, the "Zombie Apocalypse". It happens when the dead is mysteriously risen from the grave and crave for the human meats. In a high school, Takashi Kimuro is forced to kill his friend who got bitten by a zombie. He promised to protect Rei Miyamoto, the girlfriend of his dead friend. The two of them along with a few survivor managed to escape from the hellish school but they are only greeted by the society that already falls to chaos because of the dead.

More in survival, great action with somehow good plot. Too bad we won't probably get second season but this is worth watching.

7. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri)

  • Episodes: 12

  • Year: 2016

  • Studio: Wit Studio

As mankind is greatly revolutionized the world, a mysterious virus emerged that cause the human in a situation worst than death. When you're infected by the virus, you turn into a mindless monster that fed to human flesh that can only be killed by penetrating its armored like chest. In the island of Himoto, human only survived thanks to giant walls and can only be accessed via armored trains. Thankfully, a young man named Ikoma invented a weapon that can easily penetrate the heart of Kabane. It gives hope to humanity and the key to reveal the secrets behind this monsters.

This one is mostly used comparison in Attack on Titan. But for me its unique and its world is something you'll love if you're a post-apocalyptic fan. Not to mention its good animation and character designs.

6. Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph)

  • Episodes: 12

  • Year: 2015

  • Studio: Wit Studio

We are done with the flesh eating zombies now lets move to blood sucking vampires. This happen on a certain day that a mysterious virus appears that kill everyone in the planet above 13 years old. Unfortunately their plan will doomed to fail and the only one survivor is Yuuichirou. He is founded by the Japanese Imperial Demon Army with the mission of exterminating all Vampires in Japan. He joined the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and seeks revenge against the vampires.

Good show if you love vampires. Its fighting scenes is really good and its characters is great. Its plot is sadly average but you'll get hooked by its story.

5. Coppelion

  • Episodes: 13

  • Year: 2013

  • Studio: GoHands

This anime is the only one in the list that that can be most likely to happen in reality. The story happens in the year 2016 where a nuclear power plant meltdown makes a big catastrophe in Tokyo. After 20 years, the city remains as ghost town due to radiations. Hoping for any survivors and thorough inspect the area, the Special Defence Unit dispatched 3 high school girls with mysteriously high resistance to radiations. Will they able to find survivors and reveal the cause of meltdown?

Most realistic among the lists. I really love its visual designs especially on how they made the background. I like the character too. I don't know but I am looking for something in this anime. It should be second or probably third.

4. Gurren Lagan

  • Episodes: 27

  • Year: 2007

  • Studio: Gainax

It also happen in the furute where the earth is ruled by an extraterrestrial being called the "Spiral King Lordgenome" which forces humanity to live underground. People living there don't have any knowledge about the surface and lived their life through digging and expand their underground village. But one day a young digger named Simon happens to dug a giant mecha which resemble that face called Gunmen. And shortly after, a huge gunmen happens to fall from the surface and starts to attack the village. In order to protect the village simon uses his core drill to activate the gunmen and fights the larger gunmen and helps them broke through the surface. And thats where they discover what really is happening on the outside world.

Not a fan of mecha anime but this one is worth mentioning. It should be one of the best shounen out there, unfortunately not as mainstream and popular like current shows. I like the characters and on how they execute the animation. Worth watching if you love mecha genre.

3. Dr. Stone

  • Episodes: 24

  • Year: 2019

  • Studio: TMS Entertainment

Its the one of the animes that has unique plot. It is also less scary and gore but fun and adventurous instead, so thats why anyone can watch this show. Its story begun when a strange light engulfed the whole world and petrified humanity for several millenia. But one day a boy named Taiju broke from its petrification and finds his friend Senku, a science genius, already broke running for several months. The two of them combined their talent as Senku for Brain and Taiju for Muscle to plan for humanities restoration.

Most unique in anime. I really love science and this show catched my interest on how they rebuild society using science in a world similar to prehistoric era. Easy to watch and I like how they put comedy in it.

2. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

  • Episodes: 60

  • Year: 2013

  • Studio: WIT, MAPPA

It must the most popular in this list especially it is in the hot spot right now due to its Final Season. It is also the type of apocalypse that you don't want to happen in real life. Its story happens inside the wall towering through the sky in order to protect remaining humanities from man eating giants called "Titans". But from one peaceful day, everything changed when a Colossal Titan with the same height of the walls break through and creates a hole for Titans to enter. A boy named Eren Yaeger saw Titan eats his mom in front his own eyes and swear to himself that he will kill all Titans and find someone responsible for their existence. But instead, he found out that he also have a power to transform into one of the Titans and control it with its own will. This gives hope to humanities last line of defence. Along with his friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert will find a way to restore the wall and uncover the secrets behind this giants.

This anime has a special place in my heart. This is the anime that makes me watch all anime I watched so far. This is also my first post-apocalyptic anime and I don't regret that I love this one. From its storyline and plot to animation, this anime is a masterpiece.

1. Girl's Last Tour (Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou)

  • Episodes: 12

  • Year: 2017

  • Studio: White Fox

This one is my personal favorite post-apocalyptic anime. I love action anime but I love anime that has a deep meaning more. It captures my heart through its story, dialogue, character and settings. This type of post-apocalyptic anime will put you through different emotions. Its story is all about two girls named Chito and Yuuri riding in a motorbike wandering in a desolated war torned wasteland finding for food and equipment. In a cold and frozen winter, two girls continue their journey to climb a tower that will lead them to the surface with the hope to find humanities. Despite of the possibility that they might be the last remaining humans the girls never lost hope and continue to struggle and supports each other to lessen the weight of position they are in. Girl's Last Tour anime is a story of hope amidst the dark and dying world.

I will be frank in this one. You might be confused why it is in my 1st spot not Attack on Titan. To be honest you'll probably not like the anime. It leaves in a cliffhanger ending and didn't give justice to the ending. I don't know the reason but probably they will make the continuation as movie. The reason why this is my Number 1, is the Manga. If you read its continuation in manga you'll know the reason why. The anime itself is full of quotes and nihilism that you'll have a second thought that it is good to be alive. The author is genius and this series is a masterpiece.
