At the side of drawing and writing manga, another of the things that catches my attention is animation. I studied traditional animation for a year but never put it into practice. I had the basic knowledge, but without practice it's not really helpful. In this world of illustration, what works is practice.

Time passed and when I started drawing digitally and developing the idea for “Guardian Angel”, I wanted to try animation with Kyrsiel. I had no programs to help me animate, so I started drawing frame by frame in Photoshop using the layers as each of the frames and joined everything in Windows Movie Maker. The result was this gif with Kyrsiel. The line was pretty rough. Photoshop was never my favorite illustrating program.

After that, I wanted to do something with Gersiel. But considering that he is a very serious character, I wanted to do something funnier with him, so I made this gif more caricatured.

First try to animate Gersiel

Already the curiosity to work a little more movement had caught me and I tried to make a small animation of Gersiel's hair and wings. This time, I would use color in the frames and explored how to make the background more dynamic.

When the song “Caramel Dansen” was very fashionable, I remember that templates were made with the choreography that they used to give movement to different characters. I did not want to use the bases, but rather observed the movements and wanted the characters show some of their personality with the movement. Thus, as a joke with my friends that we always joined in livestream sessions, this animation was born. This time, I used Manga Studio for the drawing and it was also edited everything with Movie Maker.

I gave up animation practices for a while and took them up again last year. This time, with the help of Clip Studio Paint, I started exploring expressions, including color.

I also tested the camera functions to give the scene some movement. Clip Studio Paint has a very friendly interface for working with animations. The limitation of the version I have (CPS Pro) is that the timeline is only 24 frames, so longer animations have to be divided into several timelines. The PRO version does not have that limitation .

Finally, I tried simple body movements. I think the hardest thing to animate for me is his wings. With the hair I give myself a lot of freedom of movement, but with the wings, I have to keep the consistency of size and shape. It has not been very easy for me.

This year I would like to continue the practices with a small animation that includes more movements, interactions and sound. For this, I am already working on the Kyrsiel and Gersiel designs more adapted to the anime style. I am also tweaking the color palette so the tones are not so saturated.

In the comic, I like to work them very saturated because I feel that brings life to the static image, but in animation, I must reserve those saturated tones for scenes where there is excess light. These are the sheets with their designs.

What do you think? Would you like me to publish the progress of the practices?

Until the next article!

Muchas gracias @JPMasmela! Sí, llega un momento en que uno siente sus personajes como seres humanos reales. A veces pienso cuando llegue al capítulo final y me da tristeza pensar que todo llegará a un final ;__;
