Psychosocial Risks:

Any aspect of the conception, organization and management of work as well as its social and environmental context that has the potential to cause physical, social or psychological damage to workers. The existence of this type of risk affects both the health of workers and job performance.

They are classified into:

 Stress.

 Fatigue.

 Monotony.

 Interpersonal relationships.

They originate from different aspects of work conditions and organization:

 Characteristics of the task: Monotony, repetitiveness, excessive or little responsibility, lack of skill development, excessive pace of work, etc.

 Structure of the organization: Lack of definition or conflict of competences, little or distorted communication and information, few or conflicting personal relationships, authoritarian command style, etc.

 Job characteristics: Poor job design, poor ergonomic, safety or hygiene conditions, inadequate salary, etc.

 Work organization: Shift work, night or weekend work, etc.

 Factors external to the company: Quality of life of the person, social problems, family problems and all kinds of problems of a social nature, etc.

Psychosocial Risk Conditions - Causing Agents (List of Occupational Diseases NT-2-2008)

  • Occupational stress: Demands related to time (length of the day and shift), quantity or intensity of work, work surveillance, performance evaluation systems, quality or content of work and those of the type of activity. The (Physical) environment of the work, the organizational climate and the possibilities for professional development also contribute.

  • Labor Fatigue: High demand for quality or quantity of work, reduced rest periods.

  • Emotional exhaustion (Burnout Syndrome): High emotional demand.

  • Response to workplace harassment (Mobbing Syndrome): Interpersonal relationships with characteristics of harassment.

  • Non-organic sleep disorders: Permanent night or early morning shift. Hours in the morning or until very late at night. Long hours of work or two shifts in a row. Short period between shifts. Long intervals between breaks. I work in a different time zone. Unbalanced free time period.

  • Post traumatic stress disorder: Exposure to a situation of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature.

Preventive Measures to Control Psychosocial Risks

About the Organization:

 Modify the leadership and management systems by others in which the skills to handle conflicts adequately prevail.

 Promote changes in the company culture that favor the correct resolution of conflicts.

 Avoid conflict and role ambiguity.

 Promote stability in employment, integration and group support.

 Improvement of communication systems.

About the Physical Work Environment:

 Good design of the workplace.

 Correct lighting and adequate noise level.

 Correct temperature and humidity conditions.

 Correct workspace.

About the Individual:

 Campaigns for healthy lifestyles.
 Relaxation techniques.
 Assertiveness techniques.
 Recreation.
 Work motivation.

Consequences of Non-Prevention of Psychosocial Risks

In the Individual:

 Cardiovascular problems and diseases.
 Depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.
 Back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders.
 Medical disorders of various types (respiratory, gastrointestinal, etc.)
 Social and health-related behaviors (smoking, drug use, sedentary lifestyle, lack of social participation, etc.).

In the organization:

 Increase in absenteeism.

 Increase in “voluntary” withdrawals.

 Decrease in motivation.

 Deterioration of labor relations that damages the favorable climate that demands productivity.

 Work accidents.

Its a good information. Its good to work in a place where the ambience of the workplace is free from conflict with workmates and employer. Sometimes stress is caused by these. If we can freely exert our effort and devotion to the task assigned and the co-members are appreciative and do not spread negativity and envy if you looks better than them everything would be fine.
