Lentils are one of the main food grains of Bangladesh. Its English name is Red lentil. These pulses are boiled in water and cooked with oil and spices and cooked pulses are mixed with rice. In view of the need for meat in the human body, lentils are said to be beef for the poor. Lentils are light red in colour . The grains are smaller than khesari, kalai or boot dal. Lentils are high in carbs; As a result, it is enough to fill the lack of protein in the human body.

It is delicious to eat when cooked with salt, spices and oil. It is more elite than gram, masakalai, pea, khesari, etc .; Lentils are rarely used as animal feed. It is not only cooked with water to eat with rice; it is also used extensively in Pianju, Bara, Chanachur etc. Lentils are boiled and mashed. And roasted hodgepodge is made by mixing it with rice. Also cooked are lentil dal chachhari, dalma, dal chachhari, dal soup etc. Halim, the famous food of old Dhaka, is made from lentils which is made from a mixture of many other lentils including lentils and various spices. It is a dense liquid non-vegetarian food. Lentils help to control blood sugar in diabetics, especially those whose blood sugar rises immediately after eating. Lentils are very useful. It also helps to reduce high blood pressure if used regularly.

Soil and climate:

Lentils can be cultivated in all types of soils. However, it grows well in well-drained sandy loam soils. Lentils usually grow well in warm temperatures. But the suitable temperature for germination is 15-20 C. When the temperature drops below this, germination and yield are less. On the other hand it affects the size of the seed and its germination. For example, smaller seeds germinate faster than larger seeds.

Land preparation and fertilizer application:

Usually with 2-3 cultivations and 4-5 ladders the soil germination and crop growth is good. Lentils are a leguminous or legume crop and use air nitrogen as food. As a result, nitrogenous urea fertilizers in the market can be applied even in small quantities. In lentil cultivation, good yield is obtained by applying 30 kg urea, 85 kg DAP and 35 kg MP fertilizer per hectare (about seven and a half acre) during land preparation.

Time and method of sowing:

Kartik is the best time to sow lentils. However, lentil seeds can be sown before and after this period by understanding the condition of the land. Lentils can be sown in rows and sprinkled. However, sowing in rows is an advantage to care for and yields are higher. In this case the distance from row to row will be 30 cm. When sowing lentils, care should be taken so that the seeds reach a little below the soil. This results in better germination of seeds, no loss of seeds by birds and less wastage of seeds.

Seed quantity:

In case of sowing in rows 30-35 kg per hectare and 35-40 kg seed should be used in scattering method. If the lentil crop is more dense, it will only grow trees but will not bear much fruit. As a result, the yield of lentils will be reduced.

Attendance:

To get good yield of lentils, weeds must be controlled 20-30 days after germination. If there is very little sap in the soil at the time of sowing, light irrigation should be given especially before sowing of large grained lentils. This is because small granulated lentils germinate at low humidity but large granulated lentils need more moisture for germination. Lentils, on the other hand, cannot tolerate waterlogging at all. Therefore, if water accumulates in the land due to heavy rains, it is necessary to make arrangements for quick drainage.

Cooking lentils:

Ingredients: 1 cup of lentils, 3 cups of onion powder for barista, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder for barista, 8/10 whole garlic powder, 1 teaspoon cumin paste, 5/6 green chilli slices, half a teaspoon of whole cumin seeds, half of turmeric powder Teaspoon, quarter cup of oil, amount of salt.

Method: In a pan, make a barista of onion and garlic powder with a little oil and boil the cumin seeds in that oil and add pulses with all the above spices. Put it with pulses for a while and cover it with a little water. Pulses will be smeared. Before unloading the pulses, the barista should be spread on top.

We ussually plant lentils in here. We mix meat in it thats been stir fried with garlic and onions.
Sometimes we add it with glutinous rice and wrapped with sugarcane leaves and boiled in water, its good to pair with coffee or tea. 😊
