10000 Hours To Master Something - How Long To Master A Hobby?

I've been thinking a lot about what I want to pursue in my life. However, after giving that some thought, I have realized how futile it is to think that just theorizing what you want to do with your life will actually accomplish it; additionally that it won't happen instantly, but will likely take many years.

For this reason, I decided that doing just a little bit of active work per day pursuing/seeking a passion could pay dividends after a lot of repetitions; this is action rather than theory.

I've been reading a bit about this 10,000 hour rule proposed by Malcolm Gladwell. Here is a little description of it from this site:

"What does it take to become an expert or master performer in a given field? 10,000 hours of practice. It’s a common rule of thumb, popularized by Malcom Gladwell in his bestseller Outliers: The Story of Success."

This theory has been scrutinized and has overall been found false due to the fact that people learn at different rates and 10,000 is just a catchy and arbitrary number and thus not a scientifically valid number; however, the thinking behind it seems to have merit.

If you are working on something for X number of hours per day for many years and are working with real intent, it serves that you will be more likely to become an expert in the field you are working in over time. Maybe 10,000 hours is a generalization, but the idea to get after something a few hours at a time is something that is motivating to me.

Consistency is key.

This is something that is always said on Hive and is a lesson that I am seeing is really more important than people give it credit for. I am one who falls into the lure of quick returns and sporadic/high risk behaviors, so consistency is not one of my strong suits. However, I think that as I get older, I will come to find that the things I was patient with for one reason or another will be the most valuable and meaningful things in my life.

I will be trying to put 1 hour a day into identifying a hobby that will become my passion. I think that learning to write smart contract code is something that I wish I did in college and is something that will serve to be important. Maybe you'll catch me learning Solidity for an hour a day and by 2032 when it has been replaced 7 times, I will finally be an expert!
