The social Dilemma a must-see documentary for the times we live in
Good evening to all the members of the group, I want to talk to you today about this Netflix documentary. Which I'm sure many of you have already seen.
The social Dilemma It is a documentary of the year 2020 of the streaming platform Netflix. In which we are told through interviews with former workers in the technology industry of social networks as companies like; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (among others). They compete to capture and retain our attention as much time as possible within their platforms. And the social and psychological consequences that this is generating in our modern societies.
The documentary presents the information through interviews with experts. From which we will learn how through artificial intelligence in conjunction with knowledge of human psychology have been able to create all this "persuasive technology".
From the operation of this system of "algorithms" which manage in a very sophisticated way to recommend specific material to see according to your tastes and preferences, all this based on the videos you watch, the channels/accounts you follow and the likes you give.
All this massive data collection works in an automated way. Through an advanced computer system with "Deep Learning" capability which is able to create a profile with tastes and preferences of each user. With knowledge of what emotions and specific topics to recommend that will make you not take your eyes off the screen.
In essence, these social networking platforms, based on how they are designed, manage to change our behavior. Generating in the user the creation of unconscious habits and performed automatically; how the repetitive movement of scrolling the screen or by implementing the so-called "positive reinforcements" (counting the number of likes in a video or publication that a user receives) which activates our so-called "reward center" and that generates the release of Dopamine. Which ultimately creates powerful habits of use.
The consequences that all this has generated are varied at a psychological level; from self-esteem and identity problems in children and adolescents to problems related to eating disorders. Many of these repercussions are currently being studied and many more are yet to be seen in the years to come.
For all this and more, I recommend you to watch "The Social Dilemma", a must-see documentary for the times we live in.
