SEXISM

Many centuries dated back, many will have simply regarded sexism as a normal way of living, since nobody seems to see anything wrong in male dominance and superiority over the female counterparts. Sexism encourage the placing of greater value upon a sex than the other, most especially placing the male gender over the latter. Sexism in my experience cuts across many facets of life; we see sexism in our workplace, in schools, religious organizations among many others.

Let's consider how sexism has eaten deep into our societal system. Quite some ages back, people have believed that the girl child is useless and they are only as good as being kept as a "property". They are only limited to the kitchen and for the purpose of procreation alone, they are deemed useless and cannot have or make concrete decisions in the affairs of the home or society. Now the male is not seen in the same way the girl child is seen. Typically a male child is seen to be the heir and legitimate offspring of the family. Nowadays not much have changed course actually. People placed males over females without any actual basis or evaluation. Males are the ones sent to schools while the females are sent to go and learn handwork. Sexism has now have adverse effect on the people's mentality that some people think God has not done them well if they haven't given birth to any male child.

What about some of the languages we have been using in these contemporary times which in actual sense integrate more of sexism in our society. We use these words in our daily interactions with others without knowing its implications. For example we use masculine terms to contain a group of mixed gender such as "mankind", "man" (these two words referring to humanity). This is evident in the Holy Bible and also many written materials we all have around us today.

It's not also left out in the work sector too. Women are left out of high positions in the work place even if they are qualified by merit or other basis. Men are always believed to always be the head anywhere and in any position, such an erroneous belief!. Gender socialization has also helped in making sexism a normal way of living. People have been maneuvered to believe how both genders are expected to behave in the society through the various gender socialization agents. Howbeit, if sexism is to be reduced if not eradicated totally also depends on the gender socialization agents. Once these agents are enlightened to fight again sexism, then there may be some real change in how we see and value ourselves; both males and females.

While the level of civilization is still booming, not all are ready to embrace it. Women today have shown themselves capable in diverse areas of the economy. Sexism and gender inequality have grave consequences which should be averted by changing our orientation towards sexism

Sexism can be reduced if we all come to the right knowledge about the concept of gender equality and equity
