On Monday, my aunty will clock 14 years working at United Capital Plc. This is a place she have generated over 80% of her career experience. In the last 14 years, she have worked with seven of the most amazing executives and industry veterans, and she enjoyed working with all of them.

This her sharing her experience has she look back at these years, here are her 14 lessons learned from her years with United Capital Plc

1. You don’t need to be overly qualified for a role to want it and deliver on it.

2. The biggest job of a leader is managing people. Get it right, and you will excel.

3. Criticism from colleagues isn’t always bad. It can mean you are doing something right.

4. Start thinking of the legacy you want to leave from day one. You will leave that position one day.

5. You are your biggest cheerleader. No one will do that job for you when you get to the top.

6. Visibility comes with vulnerability. Learn to manage both

7. Understand what success means to the company you work for and understand what success means to you in that position.

8. It would be best if you had allies, but they don’t have to be senior.

9. Treat people well, and they will treat you well.

10. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Life happens.

11. Leadership is about sharing, and that may include sharing information about yourself that is personal.

12. It’s not about balancing work and family. You can integrate both. The individual circumstance will determine which comes first per time. I have had to leave the office at 1 am with a seven months-old baby at home in a bid to close out on an audited account.

13. Set goals that scare you. You might achieve it.

14. I would rather be respected than liked, although it doesn’t hurt to be liked and respected😊.
