Is this the best option/way?

The rate at which I hear people committing suicide is alarming and I can't but blame the victim in some way and in another way, I still think if I should still go ahead blaming or I shouldn't. Is committing suicide the next option or solution? Inasmuch as we all are living a life full of struggles, depression, anxiety, poverty and we think all hope is lost, taking your life isn't the solution. It's not the end of the world.

I have heard where a lady committed suicide because her boyfriend broke up with her. When I read the news, I was like "You are a fool" Now that you are gone, what do you think should happen? The guy is already enjoying himself with another girl. If you are alive and had moved on with your life, won't you meet someone better than him?

Just 3days ago, a 200 level Chemistry Student infact, a course representative in his department committed suicide and died. I need to ask these questions "Do they enjoy committing suicide?" "Didn't their conscience remind them that there is still hope when there is life?" Because I just don't get it, killing yourself over a lost relationship, failed exams or lost opportunity is something not necessary at all. You have killed yourself, those things you left behind will still be there.

With all of these scenarios, I don't think committing suicide should be the next thing because;

  • You will still face your judgment in heaven because the Bible made us understand that "thou shalt not kill". Taking your own life is a sin. A life you can't bring back to life, why then would you kill yourself over something others have gone through and overcame?.

  • You have caused sorrow to your family and friends. Don't think you are free when you commit suicide, what about your relatives you left behind? Consider the situation they would be in before trying such. That is wickedness and cruel of you to think the last option is to hang or drug yourself to death.

I thought to hear some causes of suicide and I decided to go on a research and seek people's opinion about those committing suicide and I am glad with some responses I was able to gather;

ANONYMOUS 1

"Depression can leads someone to suicide and what causes depression?Depression is the act of having deep thoughts that can makes someone loose focus/concentration. It's also the act of thinking too much which can pull human down in all ramifications. When depression sets in ones life there is tendency that such person will have weight loss due to loss of appetite, irritation to all around such individual and many other symptoms. In the present day what causes depression mostly among youths is that they put too much of hope on a particular outcome so once the outcome is not in their favour depression sets in and many see suicide as an escape route from depression."

ANONYMOUS 2

"Hopelessness for me. When the person looks forth and back and has no where to seek help from, or help is unlikely to come. Suicide then becomes an option, though they can still decide not to commit but wait patiently for death through pain. 😔😰"

ANONYMOUS 3

1. Peer pressure

2. Poverty

3. Shame

4. Abuse

5. Failure

ANONYMOUS 4

"One major cause of suicide is depression, people can fall into depression due to stress, financial problems, emotional trauma and a lot of other negative emotions. Depression ensures the sufferer is isolated, lonely and alone. When this mental illness gets to a bad stage, the sufferer can start to seek alternate means to let go and end it, thereby committing suicide.

The best ways to tackle depression includes seeking professional help, sharing issues or problems with loved ones and close relatives, being social, etc"

With all of these responses, I want to believe that one of the causes of committing suicide is DEPRESSION.

Depression: Gettyimages.com

According to American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, depression is present in about half of all suicides.

At this stage, one is set to do whatever that comes to their mind. We all have conscience that tells us what is right from the wrong and if at all you are committing suicide, your conscience should at least tell you to stop but I think your mind is already made up that you can't even give in to any second thought from yourself.

It is so sad to hear that people are really going through a lot due to many causes of suicide and in one way or the other, whatever challenges they are going through leads one to depression and at the end conclude that going away from the world is the best for them.

I also did some findings and came up with these causes of suicide that later leads to depression and then making you to commit suicide.

1. Traumatic Stress: In the world today, so many people have experienced rape, physical abuse, childhood sexual abuse, loss of Jobs and broken relationship and because of this, they are being traumatized as to where and how to start again. Everyone knew the Job they are doing and how they have been helping others and most especially having to take personal responsibility but when they are sacked, every responsibilities stopped as they couldn't go further doing what they are used to do before. With this, depression sets in and different thoughts start creeping into their minds and with that, they end up taking their lives because they feel they have tried to find other means but nothing is coming forth. They are now ignored and humiliated by friends and families.

Or someone who was molested from childhood and live to keep remembering the assault and because they don't want to keep remembering those hurtful moment or the thought that "I don't want to see him or her again", they commit suicide.

2. Feeling like a burden to others: The fear of what people will keep saying when they keep going for help is another cause of this suicidal option. Someone who is sick and lying on the same spot would want to commit suicide because he or she felt they shouldn't be bothered about them again.

Others are;

  • Hopelessness

  • Fear of loss or loss

  • Academic Failure

  • Financial Problem etc

WHAT DO YOU DO IN THIS SITUATION?

Seek a professional (Gettyimages.com)

It has been proven to be an effective way to get out of depression and not having suicidal option. You need to talk to someone or seek a health professional. As a Counselling student, I am aware of different therapies to undergo for any client going through different problems.

The professional would give antidepressants and possible therapy for you to help you calm and live a fulfilling life thereafter. Do not sit and conclude alone. There are professionals who are willing to help you. They won't come to you unless you go seek them and explain your Problems to them.

SUICIDE IS NOT AN OPTION

No excuse whatsoever is tenable for suicide. There are better ways to resolve life problems. A young doctor, about three years ago jumped into the third mainland bridge in Lagos, committing suicide. When research was made, it was disclosed that he had sickle cell anemia from birth. As a medical doctor, even though he passed exams to become a surgeon/residence doctor, he was not certified because he could enter his crises anytime and anywhere. Out of frustration, he parked his SUV on the bridge and hopped in. His corpse was recovered after three days. What a waste of human capital. He threw is widow mother into another season of morning.

Suicide isn't the best. It only aggravates pains, sorrows and distortion.

Oh what a pity to the mother. I still can't understand how these people would just consider dying the next solution. Is it that easy to conclude? They have already closed to their mind to another second thought and if it is possible for the dead to see the end of the tunnel in the grave, they would have regretted ever taking such step.

When I get myself into trouble, and overthink about it, I tried committing suicide. It happened many times before, when at some point, I felt that I don't have someone to talk to. But with God's loving grace, He did saved me and embraced me.😊I was just so blessed!😇

Unless you've tried to off yourself, you can never truly understand what goes on in the mind of someone suicidal. What we can do is watch out for the signs of depression, and someone who may be unstable enough to try taking their own life. And we must not dismiss those silently asking for help because it may be the only chance we have to prevent losing them.

You are right. Many times, not everyone can open up to us. You might be seeing them smile at you and you will never know they are going through a lot and if such person goes in there to commit suicide, we can't know. It's best to open up and not keep it to yourself.

Yes, some are bent on not helping others and if by all means, the victim dies because we fail to help when we should have, the blood is on us.

It's never the best option and it's never the way. I have written on this many times in the past and the truth is, I still can't understand it either. Those are legitimate reasons you have given here and I have always known that depression leads a lot of people to it. That is why I always tell people that we can be seated next to a broken person and we wouldn't know it. We should do our best to be of help to those who need them so as to reduce the rate of suicide.

Exactly. Not everyone can open up to others because they feel they might be rejected. At least they need to say something first, who knows someone might be willing to hear and help them out. We should also be in the position to help them because it might be the little help we render that will change their thought against suicide.

Exactly. We need to get people to trust us and we need to be trusted so they can open up. Many people are going through a lot and as you have said, they need to open up and know who to trust.

A big yes!! You've highlighted a big part of what causes depression and possible solution. Its human to be depressed when things aren't going our way, but its also human to shake it off. When we are depressed about a bad happening, we should be able to talk to someone about it, when we talk to someone about it, we lift the burden from our mind and that could go a long way in helping us discover the solution.

Even if we can't assist financially, we still have a way to help those who seek help when they are depressed. Depression is common and normal but we must always remember there is time for everything.
