Melchizedek is a fascinating character that we read in Genesis. After Abraham fought and won a battle to save Lot, Melchizedek, a priest of the Most High God, came to bless Abraham and Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything. Abraham therefore refused to take anything for himself, knowing that it was God's victory and not his.
God made Melchizedek, "King of righteousness," without recorded ancestors and superior to Abraham because he is the greatest who gives the blessing, to meet Abraham. Then he made sure it was recorded for future reference in the scriptures.
The book of Hebrews connects these three verses of Genesis with Psalm 110, in which the only other mention of Melchizedek in the Old Testament was written, and concludes that Jesus is a better high priest "after the order of Melchizedek ". Jesus did not obtain the priesthood on the basis of his ancestors, but thanks to the โpower of an indestructible life,โ continues Hebrews. Genesis and Psalm 110 point to Jesus as our high priest, and God organized them in human history, through a priest named Melchizedek, long before anyone knew what to do with them.
Who was Melchizedek? I am grateful for the theological foreshadowing provided by Melchizedek, but I question his life and the work of God in and through him. Melchizedek shows me that God was better known than Abraham's family, and these three verses from Genesis make me reflect on these people and the stories of their encounters with God, the Most High.
Melchizedek gives us an idea of โโthe work of God in people outside of the biblical plot.
I just know him right now. Thank you. This is a new knowledge for me. I search more about him.
