Taking responsibility is an important part of being able to use discernment. Following a crowd may not be beneficial and may not set a good example. If you belong to a group, organisation, workplace or any other group of people, there will always be a leader.
The leader or leaders may change over the years. At any time a company can change ownership. Even if everything was fine say 5 years ago, with the new leader or business owner, it may not be as good. In fact, it will certainly not be the same, because people have different point of views.
If things are going better in that group, then there is no problem, but if it is going through a drastic change, that leads in a negative direction and you don't feel comfortable with it, by all means don't follow the crowd. Let's change your own situation. Let's change yourself so that you are happy to go back to work, for example. Just because you love your colleagues, do not stay there at your own peril.
The Method Is Good The People Are Useless
If the old manager was replaced with a new one, who is better and more knowledgeable, they may have different ways of running a business. They may have to resort to completely different methods, that you are not used to or may not have the knowledge to do.
There are two types of interest behind this. They may introduce new techniques and changes for the benefit of the company and, of course, improve your knowledge and skills, or send you to company-sponsored courses. This type of leader has a better vision and positive ideas and plans for the company moving forward.
The other type intends to run the company with self-interest, who will run the mill for their own benefit, taking advantage of your knowledge and skills.
In the second option, I see a clear need for you to change. You need to change the job. No doubt about it. However, it is important to note here, that if you look at the first option, any change they make is for the good, but if you don't like it or don't feel comfortable with it, you still need to take the necessary steps to feel comfortable.
In today's world, choosing a job is easier, than it used to be. The number of options has increased over the decades. You have to learn to say no, if you don't like something and move on. You have the right to do so and no one will say no to you.
Only you can determine how much your moral standards are violated by the actions taken by your leaders. If you cannot identify with these measures, if you cannot work in harmony with them, then no matter much you may regret the good relations with your colleagues, you must move on.
My Personal Experience
I worked in a hotel's restaurant. I was fine for years enjoying what I was doing. I had really good peope to work with some of them became my friend. I was happy until a point, when we had a new manager. It is very common, that in hospitality the workers and the management are often change.
I was lucky, because I had a good few years and I gained knowledge and lots of experiences at my work. This new manager wanted to change a whole lot of things, that we were not used to at all and we did not see the point to change something, that has been working out for us very well.
So the changes took place not only me, but non of us liked it. Next day, we arranged some things back the way we liked it before without thinking what the new manager would say when he sees it.
I don't have to mention, that he questioned us why we arranged things back. We said, because we did not like the new way, but he is the manager so it needs to be the way he wants it.
This is a typical example for he does not see, how we enjoy our workplace and how well it has been working out for us. He wanted to prove to his bosses, that he is capable to manage better, than the previous manager and bring the company forward. We had lots of "fight" between us and him. Eventually he left and we stayed. We tried and we won. Why? Because we were a well established team, who knew better, than him and we did not let ourselves to be controlled.
I know this is the opposite what I have been saying in this article, but if you have a good team and a weak manager you can work together to get rid of them.
Using Discernment In The Marketing World
When I hear the word "marketing", I immediately think of a product being pushed on me at a discount. This is not always the case. It is possible to do marketing in an ethical way, when there is no direct selling and presentation of the product, but instead the presentation of real values.
They are not trying to sell the product first and foremost, although the end result is, but it is a much more effective way of marketing if something of value is delivered first and foremost.
Following The Crowd As A Habit
It's very easy to get into the habit of doing what everyone else is doing. We don't have to go far. If we see what our friends are posting on social media platforms, it's easy to fall into the habit of following them and start posting similar things, because we don't want to be left behind.
It doesn't make any sense, so to speak. Who cares what colour of socks the other person is wearing in the first place. I see things so pointless, that I don't even feel like opening these social networking sites.
Because the masses are doing the same thing we don't need to imitate them. It has unfortunately become a bad habit. What I have noticed is that these social media platforms are not being used for what they were designed for. Everybody has become a micro celebrity.
I would agree more to what you later emphasize. I don't like the idea of doing things because others did it. It doesn't make it right because everybody doing it. It is indeed necessary to not follow what all others had been doing. Have a good discernment for yourself beforehand and following as to what you think is good and right. For me it is important.
