Narrow Way

Adebo was a struggling young man from a humble background. He went to school as the only opportune scholar from his village. Adebo's father was a peasant farmer but was known for his acts of discipline. He was a frank man who didn't take any act of indiscipline.

When the opportunity came that a villager should be sent to the city flto study, the whole village accepted that Adebo, the son of Agbekoya be selected.

While his preparation to resume school was ongoing, some village women started bringing their daughter with them to bid Adebo farewell, with the intention of drawing his attention to the maidens.

Adebo's mind has come far away from village life. He has started seeing tall buildings and helicopters in the air as he had read in his English language text book.

On the day of his exit from the village, a large entourage with drums and dancers followed Adebo, like he had been installed as a king to the motor park. He felt like a special envoy on the said day. The truck that usually conveys passengers comes only on the first day in the week and returns on Friday evening. If one misses the movement, then he or she would have to wait till Friday evening to be able to board again.

His luggage was uploaded on the roof of the truck while he held his metal portmanteau. Mama Adebo was the first to shed tears, they were years of joy. Her son will be gone for a while. Her joy was that their lives were on the verge of a great change.

Ilesa Grammar School is a mixed high school and all students were boarders. Those days, boarding schools had expatriate teachers who were usually from Ghana and India. While the Indian teachers handled mathematics, their Ghanaian counterparts took up English Language.

During his five years program at IGS, Adebo was known for his excellence in academics. He was the best graduating student and got a scholarship to study Engineering in a university in the United Kingdom.

After he left home, Adebo had spent another fifteen years and had become so rich and had friends in the government who wanted him to contest for the position of governor.

He accepted their advice and contested the elections and won under the auspices of ACD. This did not come under a platter of gold.

Through his position, he brought electricity, secondary and primary school with modern facilities, pipe borne water and motorable roads to his community.

In his second year in the office as governor, Adebo had become a household name and he won the Governor of the year awards.

Every end of year, he hosted his political associates to a grand dinner where ideas and achievements were discussed.

At the very end of the year, after the dinner, everyone had gone home. Governor Ade I went to bed and had a dream that made him decide he was resigning from the office of the governor.

A crowd of people, male and female, were on a journey. They came to a crossroad with two paths.

The first path is broad, and had a huge description on it's sign post. Prosperity, worldliness, adultery, fornication, pride, lust, corruption, embezzlement and hatred were written out on sign post.

On the second path had a sign on it written out as well. Holiness, meekness, honesty, trust, patience, love, kindness, humility, long suffering etc

Adebo saw many people going through the first and felt that it would end in destruction so he shouted at some of them that he knew but they were deeply rooted in the characteristics of life around that path.

As he tried to negotiate the narrow path, his friends shouted at him. They told him never to go that way.

You will have to return our box to us if you choose to go that path.

On the box, there is a huge inscription.

Governor.

His wife was already on the second path, she had gone a little further and never knew what was happening behind her.

Adebo's friends started to drag the box with him. He wanted to go through the narrow path with the box but his friends told him

This box is our property, it belongs here and not there.

If you must take that path, then you would have to drop our box.

While the dragging continued, Ade I woke up and decided to resign.

Elders from his village had come to visit him on this matter but he said,

The office is bedevilled by wickedness and I don't want to be a part of it.

Two days later, Adebo resigned as the governor of the state. When he was addressing the press conference, he managed to say that politics is so dirty that it is the fastest route to hell.
