In the wake of the graduation from the university, Kachi and Debby who had been friends from their first year at the university decided to take their relationship a little further to something more serious that could lead to marriage. So, after the graduation ceremonies, Kachi bagged a degree in business management while Debby got a degree in Linguistics and English. On the graduation evening, the lovebirds decided to eat out at a cozy restaurant by the seaside. With a lot of pleasantries and sharing great ideas of what the future holds for them, they made promises to always stick together no matter the circumstances.
Chief Romanus, Kachi's father is a very powerful industrialist and politician. Many of his associates were in the political scenes and held sway in the government. While Kachi was much younger, his father struck a deal with one of his many associates named Sir Darey to betroth his daughter Adeola to Kachi. This was to keep their friendship ties stronger. Kachi knew about this arrangement but never took it with seriousness. All he wanted was to spend the rest of his life with Debby. She is the woman of his dreams.
Upon Kachi's graduation and return to support his father in his business empire, Sir Darey came visiting and found that the young man is looking more handsome than ever. He remembers the deal he had with his friend, Chief Romanus, and reminded him.
Chief, these kids are now grown. Don't you think we should solemnize the marriage we agreed for them when they were kids?
Yeah!! Chief replied.
Kachi is just settling down after graduation. We will consider when to come to knock at your door for that.
Sir Darey laughed hysterically and said:
Please, don't take too long with your considerations. I need to see my grandchildren.
The two men laughed and talked more about politics. Sir Darey is running for the governorship position. It was the final campaign period before the elections.
Sir Darey won the elections. The jubilations went on for a week. Chief Romanus lured Kachi to attend the final celebrations at Sir's golf home before his swearing-in. It was at the party that Adeola, Sir Darey's daughter was introduced to Kachi. She is tall, slim, and beautiful but full of pride. She had already been pre-informed that she was betrothed to Kachi. She thought of seeing how cute the supposed husband would look. Adeola with a smile walked up to Kachi stretching her hands:
Hi. Adeola
Kachi rose from his seat with the tumbler of champagne in his hands and responded:
Kachi. Pleased to me you.
Adeola looked him from the legs up to the head and said nothing. She sat quietly in the seat, beckoning on Kachi to seat too.
Chief and Sir Darey walked away, leaving the two of them to familiarize themselves. Kachi wasn't convinced enough that Adeola would make his kind of wife. She is rather too saucy and does not have courtesy. Throughout their conversation, she wouldn't allow Kachi share his views. She talked throughout and precisely about nothing.
After the Swearing-in
Sir Darey, now the governor of the most populous state in the nation, wanting that this wedding be settled quickly became so power-drunk and wrote an agreement that must be signed before Kachi will be allowed to marry Adeola.
Part of the clauses in the document is that Kachi would surrender fifty percent of his property if the marriage fails in the long run.
The weekend when Kachi was informed about the document that he must sign before the marriage between him and Adeola would be sealed, he ran away to Debby. There he told her everything that is going on at their home. Debby couldn't control her tears. She was so sorrowful:
I can't afford to lose you. How possibly are we going to battle against the governor?
He held her and comforted her not to worry. He is not going to now to any pressure to marry a woman he doesn't love because of the greed of their parents. He made a solemn promise to Debby that he would come back for her.
When Kachi reached home that night, he confided in his father in his inner chamber.
Dad, you know I have been a good boy to you from when I was little. Please, don't make me disobey you. I don't love Adeola and she is not my spec. Kindly allow me to marry the one my heart loves.
Chief Romanus refused to concede to Kachi 's plight but threatened him further.
If you refuse to marry Adeola, I will disown you.
At this point, Kachi knew his father won't ever bend to considering a change of mind. So, he decided to take a bold step to conclude the matter by writing his father a letter before eloping with Debby to an unknown destination.
Dear Dad,
It is with a very sad heart that I am writing you this letter. My tears won't make me see the lines on this paper very clearly.
I want you to know that I love you as my father and had never disobeyed you for any reason whatsoever but on the issue of marrying the woman of my dreams, I won't marry an angel I dont know in place of the devil I know.
Life is not all about wealth but about impact. For this reason, I am ready to forfeit my inheritance from your wealth to tie up with the love of my life in another space far away from here.
With my love, I will start life from the scratch and build a home where everyone's views will be respected.
Thank you for what you have done so far for me as a young man. I am living by what you taught me while I was growing up, not to concede to defeat
I will see you when I see you.
Your son,
Kachi.
This letter did not get to Cheif until late in the evening when he came back from the government house. When he read the note that was dropped by his bedside in his inner chambers, he went along.
His sweat came like a pregnant woman whose water had just broken. Immediately, he picked his phone and started calling Kachi but the young lover's phone is switched off.
Kachi spent several months away from home. He wanted his father to realize that times have changed. In this dispensation, parents are not to choose spouses for their children.
Chief had to lower his ego and pleaded with Kachi's friends to his only son.
When Kachi came back after series of pleading, Chief Romanus asked that he comes with the woman he wants spend the rest of his life with. When Debby was presented, the chief was wowed at her beauty. He concluded the whole matter
No right-thinking man would have this lady and not do what my son had done.
He blessed them and supported that they proceed with the marriage rites.
Marriage is something that only us should decides on it and with your story when Kachi wrote a letter to his father, whooh that was a brave one!
